Show I Page 12 - November 19. 1996 i education Uintah Basin Standard School District Lott is ready to take on job as board member By Lain Whiting Sieve Lott attended school in Duchesne, as did his five children who are now grown. Now Lott will represent the Duchesne City area as a member of the Duchesne County School Board. In a surprise victory, Lott, an auto mechanic who owns a business in Roosevelt, defeated incumbent Mel Tanner by 48 voles. The race for the school board was carried out quietly, both candidates declined interviews prior to the Nov. S election and Lott did very little campaigning.. People were basically unhappy on the west end of the county and they showed it, Lott said while discussing his win. 1 just really felt .that there wasn't the input (from the west end) into the school district as there should be. I think thats what they are there for is to listen to the community, listen to the teachers and listen to the students. ' Concerns about the disparity in funding allocations to west end schools, and '"community meetings with the school board which didnt seem to make any difference in hiring and firing practices prompted him to run for the open seat on the school board. He feels the board has got to address potential growth in west end schools before problems, such as a lack of space, are manifest Another item on Lotts agenda is changing the computer system in district schools Iron Macintosh to a system that is IBM compatible. : "Were behind using the Mac system, when kids get out of school theyre lost because they have to go to IBM. As a school board member he says hell also push to make sure the Duchesne District recruits educators who have more experience. Recognizing that h will take more money to attract more seasoned teachers, Lott believes the district will see more revenue coming in based on the growth the county is- experiencing, out if that doesnt materialize, he says the district will have to "bile the bullet and do what they can. Lott become involved with Duchesne area youth about seven years ago when he and others stepped in to save a floundering youth basketball program. He has also been involved in schools cultural arts and the through sterling scholar program. - Parents Invited Hey! Get a job!
