In spite of extreme cold and a lot of snow, the students had a very interesting day as they experienced a lot of hands on activities beginning with soils sampling, crop production, and the raising of pheasants. The highlight of the morning for the students was being able to actually handle a pheasant while Keith Hicken answered questions and told them all about the care and management of his pheasant preserve. In the afternoon the students toured a dairy operation and learned about milk production and how it relates to feed. They learned about the artificial insemination procedure and fed baby calves. In addition they learned about rangeland and what constitutes a good rangeland as far as available feed. The SCD board treated the students to a dutch oven dinner at the Hicken Lodge and they toured the clay sporting range. The students divided into three groups and did presentations on all three of the fieldtrips for the board members. This has been the first of what we hope to be many activities related to the School to Careers program. We would like to thank the SCD board and all the presenters who have been willing to give of their time and talents to help our students at Union learn about careers that they have shown an interest in. state-of-the-- The Utah State Office of Education is now recruiting volunteers willing to serve as tutors for the GED on TV program.
