Show burglars busy all the time safe at rio grande depot dynamited erastus chistensen suspected the sate at the rio grande depot at this place was blo open by burglars at about 2 clock last sunday morning and about 0 stolen the burglars evidently thought tint it was the custom ot the agent to keep consider able money in the safe but the money is either banked or turned into head quarters every day it required two explosions of nitro glycerin to wreck he safe the first explosion which tore off tha outer door and wrecked some of the furniture in the depot could be heard plainly by people living in the vicinity of the depot night policeman mathews after hearing the explosion started for the depot i cAfter reaching the station he made a trip around the building and fending everything quiet returned to main street and a few seconds later the other explosion took place it is thought that the bourglais burg lais at work upon the safe when the officer made the trip to the depot but they worked so quietly that the officer passed on without hearing them the burglars were evidently in the safe cracking crac kine business for they used enough of the explosive to wreck several safes if handled properly the next day it looke liked a cyclone had struck the interior of the depot as several articles oi furniture were cut to pieces by the flying missies the burglars evidently entered the building through a window and before starting operations they removed the globes from the electric lights thus ing the building in darkness sheriff night policeman matheke and marshal fe tillman spent the entire night in searching for the burglars but they made a clean et away tha night before the safe was cracked at the depot an unsuccessful attempt was duade to burglarize the residence of john murphy mr phy a eon who was alone in the house at the time was seized before he could make an outcry and bound and gagged after disposing of the boy the man who was evidently handling the job without help ransacked the bouse but found no money mr murphy had considerable money m the bousu housu until a few days previous and the officers aleve that in some manner someone learned that the money was there mr was the nighta shift while his wife had been upon a visit at butte she returned upon the late train friday night and found the a bound and sagged the officers had a fairly good aps of the the loy in landing him erastus chi who hag served time for various of lenses is believed to have bad a ha nd in robbing the safe at the G depot chistensen who had been cheref for a few weeks left town v cry enly the day after the safe was cracked and bite head la now trying to locate him |
