Most smokers want to quit smoking and have tried to stop at least once. Being successful is the hard part. The most important thing is having a real desire to quit Without that, no amount of help from doctors or classes will keep you from smoking. Even whm you decide to stop smoking it may take several attempts, perhaps trying different methods, before you succeed. Besides your own desire to stop, the most affective single thing is the encouragement of your physician. Talk to him. He can suggpst helpful hints and perhaps prescribe medicines. Classes or support groups cm d encourhelp give you agement and incentive. Their edu- much-neede- cational tips can be very helpful. Regardless which method you may choose, classes are worthwhile. Behavioral methods involve choosing other activities over smoking. A person ia taught new habits to replace the old. Biofeedback and relaxation techniques can help people who respond to stress by reaching for a cigarette. Some methods involve aversion to the side effects of nicotine. By smoking excessively for a short period, a person develops symptoms of nicotine toxicity which cause a person to associate smoking with an unpleasant experience. Recently, nicotine patches have become available which appear to help certain persons break the habit. Once again a collection will be taken for the homeless and needy to be distributed by St Vincents in Salt Lake City.
