A giant lighted map showing the locations from Canada to Mexico and from Colorado on the east to the Pacific Ocean on the weatia in a historical display at the Muaeum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake Gty. The map, a model, is nine feet high and has tiny r-activated lights to mark settlement Mormon patterns. Visitors are invited to push a button to light up any of the 14 different categories of settlements. The button also activates a video showing hiitorical pictures and giving a brief recorded history of the chosen subject. Among the other categories shown are towns with temples, tabernacles, cooperative enterprises, stake headquarters, mission headquarters, LDS Church academies, and farts. Between 1847 and 1857, The Church of Jesus Christ iit Latter-da- y Saints established 155 settlements. The next period, 1858 to 1869, another 155 towns wen started; and from 1869 to 1877, 121 more wen begun. From 1877, the year of Brigham Youngs death, to 1896 researches counted 202 towns; and fiom 1896 to 1930, they counted another 127. Not all of the settlements survived to the present, but the impact of the Mormon settlement program in the West is impressively demonstrated by the map and bas-reli- ef compute- i h video.
