Joe Naffidger, Salt Lake city, de coordinates for Utah. ' According to Mr. Naffidger, the program is popular with volunteers because of its short term time commitment. "Ife very rewarding work, and because ifs seasonal it doesn't impose too heavy a. time constraint Many volunteers are willing to give a few hours a week, over the approximate two and one-h- alf month tax season," he said. Volunteers are trained by instructors in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Utah State Tax Commission. Persons with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) are prone toe rare but potentially life threatening infection called andoearditie following dental work, says Tucker. The email riak of infection, which causes inflammation and possible damage to the heart valve, can be reduced to practically sen if an antibiotic, usually penicillin, ia given before dental work begins and again six hours later. But Tucker says that not everyone who has been diagnosed with MVP needs precautionary antibiotic, and ho recommends that the patients cardiologist and dentist discuss the proa and cone of such use baaed on .the individual situation. Patients whose valves have been thickened by the disease, or patients suffering with a common complication called valve regurgitation are at particular- risk of infection. Serious gum disease or infection increases the risk of endocarditis as wall, ha says. By administering an anabi-otiyou are attempting to prevent a very serious but actually rare disease with a treatment which is safe but which does offer soma ride. Ticker notes that a small number of patients could suffer an allergic reaction from the antibiotic and certainly anyone with a know antibiotic allergy should avoid using such medication at any time. c, LeLand.
