JA rt Debbie Hoopee Salary facts are misleading Dear Editor; I read with great interest the article from the Utah Foundation about teachers salaries. Fm sure many were surprised to learn that a teacher who began in 1984-8-5 has received a 28.4 increase over tiie last five years, while inflation hal risen only Unfortunately, the article left the impression that such was the good fortune for all teachers. On a number of occasions I have observed what I consider an injustice in the selection of players who represent the basketball teams during' playing time. I feel that in many incidents players are allowed to play, not becauao of their playing ability, but because of who their parents might be; what positions their parents may hold or have in the community, or perhaps their last names. I do not feel that the coaches of any high school sports should be influenced by any other factor 88-8- 85-8- 6, 86-8- 87-8- five-ye- ar Uintah Basin Standard Inc. 646-9000- 0) (USPS Second Class postage paid at Roosevelt, Utah Published weekly at 268 S. 200 E, Roosevelt, Utah 84066 teacher with four children is still at the government established poverty level and can quality for such welfare programs as food stamps. Teachers in Duchesne District have not had raises that keep up with the cost of living. It should also be pointed out that low salaries an not by choice of the local school board. While salaries are negotiated with the school board, they an only able to provide budget monies that are appropriated by the state legislature and the governor. I decided, with no family around, not to have a Christmas tree, but the second week into December, the Lee Boy Luna family decided differently, with a beautiful fully decorated live Christmas tree, reminding me, Jesus is alive. Friends from Roosevelt Christian Assembly sent prayen and Duchesne friends gave food and money gifts, plus the Fourth Ward Young Women made a gorgeous comforter.
