Utah officials are going to use the sun to help improve some areas in the state. over-grace- d The Utah Energy Office plans to use solar energy to pump water to animals in overgrazed riparian anas. A riparian area is one which is a4jacent to streams or waterways when the vegetation is different because of the presence of water. By pumping the water away from stnams, creeks and rivers, the cattle and sheep will have better access to forage on other part of the range. The livestock should gain weight quicker and wildlife will also benefit from the translocated water. Improved riparian anas will gracing values, provide long-terenhanced water quality, shade, cover for fiah and recreational benefits. Utah energy officials an cur-- . rently looking for demonstration sites when the experimental pumping projects could be installed. The energy office will provide the solar panels and pumping system, and participating cosponsors will be responsible for the fixed equipment like piping; troughs and storage tanks. If selected, the owner of the demonstration site must agree to keep the solar water pumping system in operation for at least ten years. Interested landowners are being urged to send a letter of interest to the Utah Energy Office, 3 Triad Center, Suite 450, 355 West North Temple, Salt The Lake City, Utah 84180-120letter must include information about the application area, number of and types of livestock involved, how long the animals grace in the area each year, and how many gallonx of water will be pumped each day.
