One vote elected a mayor of Oklahoma City. One vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic in 1876. And one vote elected Adolph Hitler leader of the Nazi Party in 1923. The right to vote is considered a privilege, yet only 53 percent of eligible Americans voted in the last presidential election. If only a minority is electing our leaders, then the concept of democracy has no with errors, than do nothing without mistakes. As election time draws near, many of us come up with excuses not to vote. We arent totally impressed with the candidates. Its easier to nit home and complain than drive out to the voting box. But there are competent candidates this year. There may be no one who is perfect. The presidential opponents may not have halos floating above their heads. They may not be that superman of hope, sincerity, and holiness. But at least there is someone trying to do something about problems in the nation and on the local level. ; Citizens can also do something by voting. Jim Campbell of the Utah Education Association asks how important voting is in a recent article. He answers the question with some facts. One vote , per precinct would have power. Citizens should riot give up on voting because they think it won't count. Frustrated Americans should use their energy to do something about the things they dont like. Its the right and duty of each citizen to be involved in the government system. Instead of giving up, we should use positive forces to make our communities what we want them to be. . tion hearing in Duchesne, he was the only board member in opposition to the proposed 20.6 tax increase in the capital outlay budget of the district, auid through his efforts was able to get toe support of Kent Rust and Ralph Ercanbrack to vote down that increase. He is the only board member who is supporting the tax initiatives, remising that then needs to be some belt tightening. When asked why he was willing to run as a write-i- n candidate; he responded that it was due to so much pressure from all parts of the county. He has even received encouragement from the eastern end of the county, where he voted against financing a massive 16- classroom and gym addition to Union High School. He feels that a board member cam be strong toward quality education and still represent the tax payers. Mr. Drake did apply tat a position at the hospital. Several applications were received and references were checked. Many of the candidates for the position had many yearsof experience. The opening was in our emergency room. We felt that it was important to have as much experience as possible for this position, since the E.R. is a critical, fubmoring area of the hospital. The emer- gency room is not the place to practice or loom or improve your work. Tlie emergency roan is the only place in Roosevelt where the ' hospital uses a Physicians Assis-- 1 tant. Because of the nature of the department, it is very important that the individual knows what to do in a pressured situation. We did not interview every applicant submitted for the above reasons,' but we did interview many. We feel we hired competent PA in Jim Hoopes. Also; the hospital does not control the licensing of PAs, a state agency does. And according to the state Department of Business Regulations, population is not one of the criteria considered in granting a license. Yet Drake indicates that the Attorney General implied that eras the reason Ms license was not granted.
