Big Horn Sheep are placed in new site Bighorn sheep were once relatively abundant on the North Slope of the .Uinta Mountains and in the canyon of the Green River. Prehistoric Indian petroglyphs in the area indicate its importance to early men. Over the past century, however, it has virtually disappeared from the region. A cooperative project involving the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, is paving the way for new herds of big horn sheep in its historic range. The initial transplant site, Bear Mountain in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, currently has a herd of about 90 animals. This herd is under careful animals study to observe the needs. A health, habits, and habitat second transplant site in the Green River Corridor near Little Hole will receive sheep as soon as they are available from Wyoming or Colorado.
