His subject for the cohimn is secondary 'education. by Ken McKenzie Union High School When we talk about secondary education most of us either think about our own experience in high school or our dmda experience. Which ever we think about, our memory wanders to indude both the classroom experience and the experience. High School is the time in a young persona life when heshe can start to explore those things that an of interest to them. All students need to gain e good general education, but the present graduation requirements allows a student flexibility in dess selection. In a present high school a student can take a good selection of academic courses as well aa haing involved in a number of activities. I would like to take a minute and explore some of the possibilities that a student can experience at Union High School I do this with the intent of informing the public of what is involved in todays high school. A student can follow either of 3 areas of preparation: College Preparation, Vocational Preparation, General High Schextra-curricul- ar extra-curricul- ELECT C. Morgan G lines ar ool. In these 3 areas of preparation a student can choose from 119 different classes fiat are available at Union High. On an individual basis a student will be able to enroll in about 30 courses during the 3 years at Union. Along with the regular high school courses, a student can choose to take college level courses. These will fill the high school requirements as well aa to earn college credit fin: that student College level courses are not geared for all high school juniors and seniors, but for those that are prepared they can earn dose to a year of college while still in high school. When the academic day is over a student can become involved in activities if extra-curricul- ar heshe chooses. It has extra-curricul- of the Peace Justice Fair Hours Qualified Regular Paid Political Advortli been shown through studies that those students who get involved in some kind of during high school will be more likely to succeed later on than those who just follow an academic trail through high school. At Union, a student has a wide variety of choices if heshe wants to become Involved. I will list these to give an idea: Athletics (9 different sports); Drill Team or Cheerleader, Drama, Vocational ar Con Amors teachers and administration got together and nominated Nonna Hansen aa their outstanding classified employee of the year. Hansen, who has spent 11 years at Con Amors, thought that was an unneeded gesture, but nonetheless was glad to have been only nominated. She was very surprised when she won for the entire Duchesne ifiwH District in the annual employee banquet during the Utah Education Association fall meeting. I was very honored to receive the award, of course, she said, "But, I think there are more that could have received jieople Her modesty is quite noticeable. However, her cohorts know of her modesty and made while they walked past sura when Hansen was being interviewed that everythingHansen has done for Con Amors was put into print. That pushing fin Hansen to win the award and all her accomplishments have come from the director on down. We have a director (Karen Boren) here that pushes for those things, Hansen said. She had everybody far the school writing letters in support of me to get the award. Hansen, who also drives a school bus and has for the past 11 years, has a Down Syndrome child. That reason, along with her very noticeable caring attitude, wss why she started at Con Amors. "I love to work here (presently FFA or FHA, student Council, Journalism or Yearbook, Academic Decathlon, i Chorus and Band, and a wide variety of dubs. Hansen is teaching and workii with four severly handicap children), she said. The staff at Con Amors is excellent. They are . exceptional people. It takes a special person to work with handicap children and Hansen said she is fortunate to be able too but wishes more people had the talent. I love the atmosphere and the staff but above all the children, Hansen, the mother of four children and wife of Lynn Ray of Altamont said, I would also like to say that I wished more people could work here because it gives you e whole new perspective with the handicap. . Although Hansen may have had her first calling as a bank employee, she is glad that she entered teaching ami helping the handicapped. "It keeps me young, she said, If you are not working you get ) , - old. Con Amors administration and staff along with the children -are hoping that day never comes. He is a 1986 graduate of Union High School Roosevelt School was nominated and won the Duchesne District Classified Employee of the Year; Hansen said she was pleased to win but ( felt there were more applicants deserving of the award. She received $25 cash and a beautiful plaque. A recent study from the State Department of Education states that there is a trend among high school students to take more classes in math, science and the foreign languages. The visual arts .is up slightly and music and physical education is going down slightly. The results of thu study suggest that the new state graduation requirements which were put in place during 1983-8- 4 are having a substantial impact on the programs of students over the past three years. College admission standards are also having an impact on students in recent years. Aside from all that I have mentioned about education it helps to have teachers and other stan members that are capable and willing to help the students learn and grow. I would like to take this opportunity to express my support for the fiw faculty at Union High School. The students who come to school willing to learn and grow will find teachers and other staff members who are anxious to help them achieve their goals. i There is one more influence on a students life that has a great impact on their educational experience. That influence is the students parents. Parents, I hope fiat you realize how important your attitude toward education is. Your support for your son or daughter in their educational pursuits is probably the most important influence on their educational experience. Kindergarteners at East Elementary studied the story of "The Three Bear." They learned bears and had several bear activities including a bear story told by Mr. Mitchell, the school principal. These classes were Mrs. Jorgensen's and Mrs. Hall's.
