The Cougars loBt 61 to 74. John Vallentine said South Summit got out to a 17 point lead in the first quarter and never looked back. "They came out red hot and we were ice cold," he said. The Cougar's second half was considerably better, according to Coach Vallentine. The Cougars put a press on the South Summit squad and cut their lead to eight points, but they pulled it out to the 13 point final victory margin by the end of the game. One of the contributing factors on the lose was a freshman eager named Rydalch. When he was put on the bench in the third quarter, Coach Vallentine said, . Union made their comeback attempt but then Rydalch came back into the game and "took control of the game. For the Cougars, Rod Mezenen played excellent defense and Mike Olsen really added a spark and scoring threat off the bench, Vallentine said. Brent Jarrett was "tough on the boards and the team didn't 'get anyone into foul trouble too early, he stated. Ryan Eldredge did foul out of the game with about two minutes left, but Coach Vallentine said the team had just been fouling the other teams theyd played too much in the past. .Everyone weve played has been great from the line, he said. To illustrate this point he mentioned that South Summit had made 18 line in points from the their last game. free-thro-w - s 4 A This week they are facing two really tough games. At home they will host North Summit who are currently unbeaten in league play. North Summit just got by Lehi and South Sutaimit in recent games, teams Union has lost to rival And then the Cats face Duchesne on January 4 on the Eagles home court. Vallentine said the North Summit squad looks to be the one to beat this year, in league play, A High before the end of school on that Monday. A double elimination tournament is anticipated but each match of the tournament will be completed when a wrestler has scored three take downs. A maximum time of four minutes will be alloted for each match but the championship, which will have no time limit Action will be encouraged through use of a' stalling warning. If a wrestler fails to make offensive contact with his op- ponent for 15 seconds a warning will be given. A second warning will result in his opponent being awarded a take down. For the past decade, they and their army of senior citizens, Boy Scouts, conservationists, and prison laborers have salvaged a quarter of a million chestnuts from one of America's last stand of chestnut trees along Michigan's eastern shore. From the early 1900s to the 1950s a lethal fungus imported from Japan nearly wiped out this American tradition. and the Eagles have always given them a good tough battle. Ive discovered there isnt a whole lot and of difference in the leagues with the first five on the court, he said. A 2-- A Union hopes to better their, one and three league record against the North Summit team on January 3 at home, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Altamont wins on the road Altamont traveled out of state another basketball victory Friday, December 20. They beat Rangely 54 to 64, for a great Christmas win. This gives the Longhorns a 5 and 2 record for the season. However League play does not officially begin for a few more weeks. Scott Brown, coach of the Longhorns said the team played as well as hed seen them play. They complemented each other and had good assists throughout the game. Three Longhorns finished the game in double figures with Charlie Lamb scoring 26 points, Rob Marshall getting 20 and Chad Orme with 10 points. The Longhorns took off right from the start of the game and never looked back. They pressured the other team and held down the sewing of the Panthers. ' In fact, the score doesnt tell the whole story, as the strength of the Longhorns, according to coach Brown, is in their defense. He believes that it is their defensive effort, their quickness and pressure that continually pulls them through. For example, Orme had 7 blocked shots in the game against Rangely. This game was also played without the starting-poinguard. Bill Tew has been out of play for the past weeks with a cut finger. Gary Sorenson filled in for Tew and did an excellent job. Tew is expected to be back for the games against Tabiona and St Marks this week. for 4x4s busting TOUGH FORD beat old man winter with a blizzard on tough Ford 4x4 from your Ford Dealer.
