Show If w eat only when were hungry, we would still be fat. But when we eat to avoid boredom, feast n three big, metis a day, whether we need upon to or not, and nibble on eweet tidbita after a tough day-aft-er ; til we deserve a little treat-- we grow obese; we become ' , gluttons.. Emotional eating, treating ourselves because we feel deprieved, bored, angry and lonely, greatly contributes to the excess pounds carried around by 80 millim, 0f us. We, in the early eighties, are fatter than ever. On a national basis we are fatter in every age group than we were 20 years ago. - We are fatter because we are eating more. We view food as a social crutch, a soother of tension and a defense against emotional trauma reports Marilynn .Larkin, author of Emotional Eating' How We Do It v and How To Cope. It appears that in times of stress, we reach for food because it is abundant and readily available. Eeting appears to curb stress as the process of chewing and swallowing .provides a physiological release from ' tension states TjrUn She cautions that food should not be used as the first line of defense against emotional trauma. AH to often we will run out for a danish because we have an accumulation of work piled upon our or hover around the buffet instead of . finding someone to converse with. Foods represent security and often we craze certain foods when our emotions are aroused. Certainly, tit-dow- of obesity. Natural selection favored those persons who could pile on excess weight during times of prosperity. Those persons with a large fat build up could better survive the cyclical times of shortages and famine. Although we live in an industrial society where food shortages arent a problem, our control centers still tdl us to stock up for that famine. Thus, we have endemic obesity. The obesity epidemic, states Melvin Konner in the Roots of Gluttony, is merely the more obvious result of self stuffing. emotions will tempt us into eating when we dont want too. but why cant our bodies do a better job of regulating, food intake? There are a number of ways for the body to regulate feeding. It is important to know that we feel satiated long before a meal is digested. Since digestion takes hours, if we were to eat the whole period during digestion, we would be obese in no time. We receive numerous chemical signals telling the mind are are satiated. But this system, apparently, cant control our appetite. It is evident, just look at the numerous obese people around, that several factors can override the best efforts of the system. One of these factors is taste variety. A rat will regulate its body weight given an ordinary But given the same diet sihgle flavored food. artifically flavored in four different ways, the rat will greatly increase its intake, sometimes eating twice as much as normal. Another reason we are becoming fetter every year is that our bodies tell us to stock up for a famine that never arrives. We are following the evolutinary track . ; : dk Mlbimm Instead of relying of food for comfort, we need to think of other ways to fed better emphasizes Laridn. We need to become aware of eating habits, monitor them and change them. There is only way to lose weight, and that is to grow accustomed to feeling hungry says Konner. To keep weight off we need to change our percetion of food and change our eating habits.' Lets place food lower on our daily list of priorities. ffiunsMKgss (Cornu!?
