Show 1983 Th.,rwy. July Urteh Bash Stcncfcrd 5 Blow Your Horn proves successful What happena when a brother and bachelor, hia their parent! cannot communicate? Total Chaos. And on atage the result apolla comedy. Local theapiana created communication commotion with Neil Simon'a Come Blow Your Horn" performed under the direction of Nela Carlson for the annual Bottle Hollow Dinner Theatre. The opening night performance induced a strong chain of laughter, though parts of the play did hold a few weak links. In Act 1, Alan Baker (Darrell Jones) is in his bachelor apartment with dingy Peggy Evans (Kathy Dart). Peggy nas plenty of air between her ears and Alan has plenty ' of questionable linen' to fill the apace. Alan doesn't have much trouble convincing the young Peggy he is indeed a swinging bachelor, but actor Jones has a difficult time convincing the audience. This weakness produces a lead character with too little impact Jones' lines seem a bit too forced for the easy-goinguy he attempts to portray. The prattle between he and Dart lacks spontaneity. The same weak link is found when Alan and his girlfriend Connie Dayton (Jill Ellia) get together. The fun and games between them is also strained, but its not all Jones' fault as Ellias seems slightly uncomfortable on stage as well Fortunately, the acting chemistry ld g u the play between them improves moves on. - Jones' greatly im-- . performance his when character, Alan, meets proves with younger brother, Buddy Baker (Donny Sawyer). v Sawyer's ease on stage seems to stimulate spontaneity in Jones. The character Buddy has run away from home, his father's fruit business and responsibility, to live with older brother Alan. Both brothers are in a transition period in their lives and communication between the two makes for some hearty laughter. , . own well on stage and had the audience roaring. When Sawyer and Tucker get together the outcome is classic. They play off each other excellently. Buddy has left home and in Act 2, mother is distraught Tucker is convincing. Simon's writing shines again; "You won't eat unless the food is right in front of youl" . . ."Mother, no one eats unless the food is in front of them. Finally, Mr. Baker comes to stage. Harry Baker (Stewart Mortenson) enforces the play's message, as he and his bachelor bum" son, Alan, confront each other. "Your answers never match my questions," says Alan. But the actors are too staged to be convincingly angry. In Act 3, there is a similar confrontation between Buddy and Alan. Meant to light a fire under the audience, it does get warm, but doesn't explode as Simon has written it to. . The storyline is bright and rarely gives the audience time for breath between laughs. Sawyer, Tucker and Neil Simons script are the main strengths of this play. When other seta's stumble, quick, comic remarks hold them up. The set should also be praised as it is bachelor-lik- e and useful; props are used to the utmost advantage.. As with most comedies this one comes to a chuckling end. The fast-pace- d, communication gap is never really bridged, and toward the end it gets so stirred up one would actually like to blow a horn to calm it all down. Overall, the strengths of Come Blow Your Horn outweigh the weaknesses. The nlav succeeds as an enjoyable comedy and is worth $13.50 or $14.50 for dinner and show. The theatre will play July 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and 30. Their conversation is alive with sarcasm and familiar humor. Buddy eomplaina that Mom and Dad are too They set stifling and me up with a girl, very bright, her IQ is 170 - the same as her weight." Comments like this strike a familiar chord with the audience. Simons talent with the script can be praised, and Sawyer presents such lines so well that he puts extra electricity into the punch. If acting is Just a summertime nobby for Sawyer, it should be a year-rounendeavor. He is talented. ' d Another good performance is given when Buddy's mother appears. Mrs. Baker (Kathy Joe Tucker) is a bundle of nervous energy. Communication becomes jumbled when she attempts to take phone messages for her boys and cant find a pencil.
