Show Editorial (Basin Standard HJJintah Oath of office is acceptance of responsibility A number of elected officials in the Uintah Basin took their respective oaths of office Monday, January 3. With that oath was the acceptance of a great deal of responsibility, both to the office and to those who elected these officials. During the election the candidates were recognized as the representative of a particular party. During Monday's swearing in of Duchesne County Officials, outgoing County Clerk Janet Cowan reminded officials of a basic, and often forgotten, concept. Mrs. Cowan reminded those taking the oath they are no longer the republican or democratic candidate. Instead, they hold a county office and are expected to represent all county residents. This may seem like a rather obvious statement, but the sad truth is that we must often be reminded that this is so. Candidates, whether County or City, run under one party or another. This association is designed to better define that candidate's beliefs and possible future actions. However, once an individual has been elected they become a representative of the people. All the people The oath taken by such individuals may seem to some be only a formality, but it is much more than that. For in these words lies the only hope that representation of the private citizen will remain foremost in the minds of our elected officials. We can only hope our officials will remember from whence they came. They have accepted this responsibility, and they should be held accountable. However, they should also have access to input from the private sector. It is less than fair for residents of the Basin to expect their officials to represent them when they fail to make their feelings known. The responsibility is a joint venture, and we should all become involved. With 1983 only several days old, now is the time to change things for the better. There are many challenges to be faced in the Basin, and we have elected individuals felt to have the ability to deal with the situation. .Now is the time to make sure they are capable of dealing with their tasks!
