Anticipation on the part of the children is very high, and the pressure on adults can often be great, especially when life has dealt them a bad hand. Every year there are people out of work who are striving to maintain some semblance of family. For these people Christmas can be a very difficult time. Many pressures exerted by aotiky can make the inability to provide gifts and an elaborate banquet intolerable. Bkause of this situation, the Roosevelt Soda-le- t te Chib has been involved for many years in a Sub for Santa" program. The efforts of thek ladies, with the help of businesses and dtizens, have provid; ed families which might otherwise have gone without the ability to enjoy the Chrismas season. According to Susanna Lowe, last year's Socia-lettPresident, they were able to provide food, clothing, toys, and food to four or five families. She said the first concern was determining those families who were truly needy. She said they contacted various churches in Roosevelt as well as Family Services. Having done this they to acquire the necessary items. Susanna said they mailed letters to local busi- proceeded nesses and asked for anything they could spare in certain sizes. In addition to tins, they had money donated by various groups and individuals which was used to purchase clothing, toys, and food. There were a lot more that we could said have given to, but we just Susanna, didnt have enough people." Karen Shelly, this years Sodalette President, said they again have four or five families to which they will provide various items. Kami said they are expecting more of a need this year. Because of inflation and the economic situation, the problem may be said worse this year, Karen. She said a number of families are those in which the bread winner has been laid off and hasnt worked for some time. The people who got help last year really appreciated it, said Karen. She said they were able to provide complete dinners as well as toys and dothes. The same stores have really been good to work with. The area of the eye affected is the macula a tiny part of the retina lining the back of the eye. In normal vision, light passes through the eye and trikes the retina, a sensitive network of nerves. In macular degeneration, the macula loses its ability to function efficiently, affecting central vision. In most cases the process is not sudden, but progresses gradually. O Ar- v People affected by the disease find it difficult to see at long distances such as when driving, to do close work, to see faces dearly or distinguish different colors. Anyone experiencing a loss of vision should have a thorough eye examination.
