For this reason, they are looking into the situation with both Mountain Bell iaad , Uintah Basin J Telephone.' According to Ken Hill, Mountain Bell, it has not been a case of them not wanting to serve that area, but a situation where there was a great deal of open area, namely Ballard. Hill said , as Roosevelt and .. Ballard grew together the services provided by Mountain pen slowly increased. How- ever, because Ballard City contains such a large amount of land, much of it sparsely populated. Mountain BeO did not go into those low population areas. These areas were served by Uintah Basin Telephone. However, as both utilities began to expand with growth, they soon met When they met the present problem wu encountered. Hill said that because of YfTHBr you have areas of grestfsttPate aadlhen wait for other areas to develop. He said that no matter how fur Mountain Bell, or Uintah-.BasiTelephone move out the problem wiU'aomeday be encountered. He said tbs solution is not as easy as just running a line across the road. According to Hill, it involves the running of a line, back to their main office in Roosevelt and then back to the particular home or homes, You're talking about an enormous cost" said HilL Martin Brotherson, director of Uintah Basin Telephone, said they have about (3,500 invested in each subscriber in the .Ballard area. He explained that for them to turn those facilities over to Mountain Bell they would have to be paid in full for that equipment. Thia would require a . iseable amount ef money from Mountain BelL . 3 VV Brotherson said when the problem was first encountered Uintah Basin Telephone suggested this alternative to Mountain foil,' but he said they weren't interested. Brotherson said the problem is recognized by til parties involved, bqt is one prhich will most likely always exist' We dont went to stand in the way of progress," said Brotherson. Ho said he can see tbs desires of the people to be able to pick up their phones and dial, but added that; be really doesn't know what to do about the problem. When a- - phone, utility offers Extended Area Service the tendency is to tie up phone Unas because people are so they remain not paying for the on tiie phone Jaeger This, forces the costs up for the''Utflity; However, Uintah Basin Telephone does provide a discount of 60 percent off regular day time rates. This requires the payment of a $2.10 monthly fee. This allows the phone caller to get BO minutes per month at the discount rate. Anything over that fc charged jtt the regular day time rate. v Brotherson said ihoy ' are now looking at an answer. He said they will moat likely suggest that the .situation remain as is.
