FRIDAY JANUARY 16 Culture Club meeting at the home of Mrs. Clem Labrum. of Dimes Mothers March set for Jan. 13 & 14 March Ai chairman of the 1981 Mothers March on Birth Defects, Arlene Funk and Guera Taylor will lead the 1961 Mothers March on Birth Defects in Duchesne County. This years march will be held Jan. "Every year more than 250,000 newborns come into this world suffering physical or mental damage due to birth defects," Mrs. Funk of Roosevelt said. "We are soliciting and by other means funds of personal contact as our response to this tragic health reality," she said. This is the 80th anniversary of the Mothers March which began in Phoenix, Arisons in 1950. "Today the volunteer appeal is held every year by more than 800 March of Dimes chapters throughout the country," stated Mrs. Funk. "The Mothers March is not only a fund raising event," she explained, "but also an opportunity to acquaint as many people as possible with the tremendously needed work being done by the March of Dimes." Programs of research, medical services, public and professional health education are major ways in which the March of Dimes is working to prevent birth defects in local communities and nationally, as welL "We are very community-minded,- " Mrs. Taylor said. "Because birth defects are far more widespread than many people might first think, the Mothers Much offers all of us an opportunity to learn and to do something positive in battleing this scourge at innocent children. The first Desk & Derrick Club was formed 29 years ago by Inez Audi Schaffer in New Orleans. There were originally four clubs in the association: Houston, Texas; New Orleans, Los Angeles, Calif; and Jackson, Miss. The emphasis was on education and a geologist suggested the desk and derrick as being symbolic, hence, the Desk and Derrick name and loga A.J. Rutenger, a chemical engineer for Dowell in Vernal, will be ihe guest speaker at the January meeting. The meeting will be held at MAPCO, Inc.s new conference room at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13. MAPCO is located one miles north on Crescent Road in Roosevelt. Members of the club and their spouses were served a ham dinner with all the trimmings. Leonard Ferguson and Dave Holmes entertained the gathering by singing Christmas carols. The group exchanged white elephant Christmas gifts. The next meeting of the Culture Club has been changed from Jan. 8 to Jan. 15. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Clem Labrum. A social hour and dinner preceded the meeting. Betty J. Nelson, who is the outgoing Director of Region 7 of the International Association of Desk & Derrick Clubs, came from Denver, Cola, to attend the meeting. Ms. Nelson helped the proposed club iron out some problem areas in the bylaws so that they could be officially adopted into the membership.
