Show 1 A Plan to drain Starvation modified, fishery to stay A modified plan from the Bureau of Reclamation ealla for drawing the level of Starvation Reaervoir down to 15,000 acre feet of water thia fall to allow for the conatruction of the intake atrueture for a new water treatment plant for the city of Ducheane. Until recently, the Bureau planned to draw the reaervoir down to "minimum pool," only about 2,000 acre feet of water with a depth of only 14 feet The 15,000-acre-folevel would have a maximum depth of 00 feet and a aurface area of about 700 acres. The remaining reaervoir would be about the aixe of Big Sand Waah when it ia fuQ, according to Leo Brady of the Bureau of Reclamation. With thia change in plan, Nile Sorenaen of the Diviaion of Wildlife Reaourcea aaid hia department ia not planning to poiaon the reaervoir to kill the chubs. There had been concern expreeeed by members of the Ducheane Area Chamber of Commerce that draining and poiaoning the reservoir would kin or cause the trophy-aia- e fish which have been caught from the reservoir to go on down-riveHowever, Brady aaid early this week that the higher 'water level should "leave the fish conservation pool intact" and that there "shouldn't be any real impact on the fishery. Brady said at this point water is ot r. USB being' stored in Starvation as a flood control measure, as the Ducheane River ia high with run-of- f from melting snow in the Uintah Mountains. Some flooding was reported early thia week in the Ouray area. "Then we'll shut the gates and start filling it up again, he said. He said this ia a good year for draining the reservoir down, as normal or above normal streamflows are forecast The ilake could be as full by this time much as next year and the reservoir should be full within two seasons under normal conditions, he predicted. The lake will be low for the Labor Day holiday, he said, and throughout the fall and will be lower than usual next spring.
