Without getting into any type of discussion regarding any real or imagined medical benefits, consumers looking for relief from their ailments are getting ripped off in these so called promotions, pointed out Francine Giani, Utah Division of Consumer Protection director. The scam has been active for several months in other states and recently started to appear in Utah. The postcards from companies selling magnetic mattress pads, with unproven health claims, invite consumers to a free dinner and presentation at toll-fre- Arrested? Searched? Main, Helper DUI, Felony Detune (435) 472-551- 3 What consumers are not aware of is that the individuals making the pitch, regardless of the claims they make, are professional sales speakers, hired to sell as many items as possible as fast as possible, indicated Giani. And since the promoters are paid by commission, they make money by selling the products. Promoters tell potential buyers that all consumers have to do after the trial period is call the company and get an au- thorization number to return the item. But by the time the trial period ends, consumers trying to obtain refunds frequently find that the companies have gone out of business. In addition, after 60 to 90 days, most credit card companies will not allow charges to be disputed or reversed. Recently, Florida and Cali- -' fomia accused one company of using the marketing technique in question, explained Giani. European Health Concepts Inc. is alleged to have made false claims about the magnetic mattress pads and seat cushions the company peddles. California is demanding more than $1.5 million in penalties along with full restitution to customers. The Utah Division of Consumer Protection recently initiated an action against European Health Concepts. Carbon County residents should remain wary of sales promotions requiring people to purchase immediately in order to take advantage of supposed discounts and otherwise forcing consumers to make hasty decisions, stressed Giani.
