In recent years, strong leontologists think that certain types of dinosaur are known as dromaesaurs, which includes Deinonychus, or Velociraptor (more popularly known as the "raptor in the Jurassic Park" movies), were avian ancestors because they resemble birds in many ways but were still clearly too large to fly. A smaller contingent of scientists have outspokenly denied the dinosaur relationship to birds claiming that dromaeosaurs were only dinosaurs and had nothing to do with the evolution of birds. These dissenters believe that birds evolved from an animal more primitive than dinosaurs which was very small and capable of climbing. About the only thing both groups agreed on was that dromaeosaurs were ground dwelling dromaeosaur had symmetrical feathers like those of flightless birds and regarded it as being sup- port for the dinosaurbird theory has come from a number of remarkable fossils of dromaeosaurs, found in China, which have been so well preserved that parts of the skeletons appear to be surrounded by feathers. Still, some scientists, including prominent ornithologists, have argued that the fossilized feathers are not real and could be an artifact of preservation. One fossil though, described March 7, 2002 in the journal Nature , was so well preserved that it was presented as the best evidence yet that dromaeosaurs were covered by modern feathers like those of present-da- y birds. Even though this fossil particular of a claimed dinosaur n be- cause it supposedly could not fly-- However, the new study released in The Dinosaur Mu- seum Journal has independently examined the same specimen and has found that this dromaeosaur actually had wings complete with asymmetrical flight feathers indicating that it could fly and therefore was a bird. The same paper described another dromaeosaur as well which had wings with flight feathers. These fossils conclusively show that dromaeosaurs were already birds and do not represent the stage of n dinosaurs as most scientists have believed. This reveals that the popular belief of feathered dinosaurs as being the ground dwelling, flightless ancestors of birds is fundamentally flawed. By not recognizing that dromaeosaurs were birds, this mistake led scientists to believe that some dinosaurs were evolved toward becoming birds. As long a pre-flig- dromaeosaur is about the size of a large crow, it was considered too primitive to be called an actual bird.
