The drought of 1977 was awful. Restaurants only served If you asked for it. The waterings of lawns was cut down to a bare minimum. Everyone realized the vital necessity of conserving every last drop. In 1994, we feared another dry season. The City of Monticello typically uses 750 acre feet of water per year. Presently, the City's share of Loyd's Lake water stands at 1,000 acre feet. Some people may think that this is plenty of water, and it is, unless next year finds us in a similar situation. The City Council and administration earnestly seek the help of every citizen in Monticello in wise water use this year, indoors as well as outdoors. am Th e Council has Inc. Unrein 801-24353- 48 determined that the City will set the example in the conservation of have raised the concern that the new golf course will use far too citizens water. Many much water. The new irrigation system on the course was a million dollar investment. With eighteen hundred sprinkler heads, this computerized system is capable of turning on a single head or group of heads predetermined and for any length Of time. That time is determined by a computer program linked to.an on-siweather station determining wind speed, humidity, air temperature, and rainfall. This system will be able to detect where or when the grass needs to be watered, if at all. Watering of the newly established lawn and plants is vital the first year. The City promises to not use any more water than is necessary. hollyunreinsolutioncenter.biz It has also been determined by the Council that Circle Park will not be watered this year until a new automated watering system is installed. In addition, the ballfields and City Park will be watered very conservatively. We realize that the brown grass that will result won't be a pleasant sight, but we don't want to see any waste taking place. Action has begun to upgrade our collection system on the mountain to enable us to collect all the water that we have rights to, whereas, the old system has many leaks. We hope by doing this that more water will make it to our reservoirs. In addition, we ask for all citizens to be aware of any leaks or water usage abuse and report it as soon as possible to the City office. The golf course superintendent, Jim Robison, will report the computerized data for outdoor water usage to the San Juan Record for publication. Hopefully, this data will help the citizens water more wisely. Jim has also volunteered to help make adjustments to citizens sprinkler systems and to help determine how much water usage they need. Please contact the City Office for this service. We thank in for your advance you conscientious effort in conserving our water. |
