THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, September 28, 2001 -- Page 7 i t I - by Bill Boyle It has been quite a fall for - bears in Monticello, with up to a dozen bean entering the town in a never-endin- g search for food. Hie number of bean is growing hard to keep track o but as far as we know, three bean have been shot in city limits and more than that have been trapped and released in other locations. The bears in town are here because ofdecreased forage after a frost on June 14 killed most of the acorns. With the large number of sightings both in and out of town, it is safe to state that the bear population is the largest it has been in recent yean. Mother Nature has efficient and cruel ways of taking can of population issues. According to DWR officials, the bean they have captured are 50-7-5 pounds underweight. If there is a harsh winter, it is likely that a large number of bean will not survive the winter. The San Juan Record is on the radar screen of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. A recent wilderness alert, which is sent via email to SUWA members throughout t the worldasked the letters be sent to area newspapers in opposition to a recent Bureau . of Land Management decision to allow oil and gas exploration near Dead Horse Point State Park. The San Juan Record was one of the newspapen listed. The SUWA call for action for Letters to the Editor was heeded by a number of SUWA members, who wrote to the San Juan Record decrying the environmental degradation caused by the proposed exploration. The letter writing campaign is part of a well orchestrated fight against the project, opposition to which has grown to include on-siprotests and acts of vandalism. We ran one of the letters last week from David A. Lien of Colorado Springs, Colorado. We seek and accept Letters to the Editor on local issues and are glad to print them, however we cannot and will not print the large number ofwhat are essentially form letters. . A protocol we follow at the paper when we receive a form letter from outside the area is School children in San Juan County will be out of school Thursday and Friday for the annual Utah Educators Association convention.
