The San Juan Record Dear Editor: I am writing to express my concern and outrage regarding the BLAfs approval of Intrepid Oil and Gas Companys vibroseis buggy oil exploration project near Dead Horse Point State Park (DHPSP) and Canyonlands National Park (CNP) in southeastern Utah. Veritas Corporation, contracted by Intrepid Oil, plans a 36 square mile oil and gas seismic exploration on land adjacent to CNP and overlapping portions of DHPSP and the Gold Bar Wilderness Inventory Unit The massive, ground pounding buggies (i.e., trucks) will crisscross the area, crushing delicate soils and vegetation and breaking countless miles ofnew trail that will undoubtedly be exploited by wayward ORVs. I do not believe that there should be any mining, drilling, seismic buggies, etc., allowed in the greater Canyonlands region. The continued approval of oil and gas wells on these public lands should be discontinued and the remaining wild areas should be protected completely, and preserved in their natural state, as wilderness. For too long our public lands have been managed for the betterment of the corporate balance sheet and not for the betterment ofthe American public. Tbday Americans are demanding that these lands be preserved in their natural state for the betterment of wilderness, wildlife, and future generations. Its time for the BLM to recognize this and to get out of bed with the extractive industries who would gladly destroy the few remaining wild areas in this country simply to improve their bottom lines and line their pockets.
