Wednesday by Gary Tbrres The baseball season is over, but the Bad News Bears have invaded the Monticello baseball field. The latest bear story involves Officer Kent Rowley playing baseball with a bear. Shortly after midnight on September .11, Officer Rowley chased a besr (5-- 6 year old male) to the baseball fields with his patrol car. He tried his best to keep the bear in the ball park until Division of Wildlife Officials could get there, but the bear was tired of being chased, so it scooted up a power pole. Officer Rowley tried his best to keep the bear up the pole but the bear had a different idea and came down. I can only assume the two individuals involved in the altercation (the bear and Rowley) felt that each was a threat to each others food supply. Based on my extensive experience as a I know for a fact that bears eat donuts. It is also a well known and documented fact that the base of the food pyramid for policemen are... well... donuts. There is no crime in a bear liking donuts, but generally it is a good idea to not eat someones donut especially if he has a gun. With so much at stake and since the bear was coming down to search Officer Rowleys car for donuts, you can see that there just wasn't much choice in the matter. There are two points worth noting. First, the bear did not have a search warrant And secondly, when bears search -- they generally rip things apart. The response was the bears untimely demise as Officer Rowley had no choice but to take the bear down. However, on an official note, DWR was involved with the ordeal so lets not have everyone in town shooting bears out of trees, okay? If my informal census on bears is accurate, the DWR boys have been keeping more than busy. Indeed they have moved or killed enough bears this year to field a baseball team. Here are the facts. So far three bears have been destroyed. One bear was hit by a car near Butler Wash and had to be shot An older female was shot' because she was eating Bruce Adams dead cows, and of course the bear The 250-poun- d male bear killed in Monticello by police officers. Three bears have been trapped and moved from was run over (by several cars), but the corpse mysteriously disappeared before DWR could claim the hide. A large black bear is still at large in the apparently not paying the Monticello area, but is leaving Monticello. These bears were green fees for the golf course so they had to be moved. We cant have any free loaders on the new golf course. Three more bears were trapped and moved from the apple orchard near Recapture Reservior. Apparently, Kay Shumway grows some mighty tasty apples. One bear was trapped and moved from the orchard in Montezuma evidence all over town. There is also an undocumented report that a tiny weenie baby bear is out ravaging the Bermuda Triangle for Rednecks (La Sal). I will check up on this story, although it will probably be one of those bad smelling bears with a white stripe its back, you know how excited some reporters get down sale to fund tech programs Chopper the Five College years ago, of Eastern Utah - San Juan Campus purchased a Vietnam era med-eva- c helicopter for $5,000 from the Utah State Agency for Surplus Property.
