Planet Bluegrass said the check points in Dolores, Montezuma and La Plata counties are unconstitutional because they target concertgoers. Officials say the roadblocks are there primarily to catch people who violate traffic laws. Cars are searched only with the occupants permission. The lawsuit said the roadblocks have forced motorists to wait for unreasonably long periods, even though most of them have committed no offense. Cortez Journal Exploration at a high in Uintah Basin Roosevelt - Thanks to promising prospects and encouragement from Washington, D.C., the Uintah Basin has become a target for wider oil and natural gas exploration. Most of Utahs oil and gas drilling now occurs in the basin. Why the renewed interest in the Basins once thriving resources? Compared to recent years, oil and gas prices are at a phenomenal rate. Also a change in the presidential administration has brought a posito further energy development. While oil and gas tive is exploration opening up in the basin, right now drilling in the basin is almost exclusively for natural gas. An official said that one reason for the natural gas drilling is the fact that drillers have likely found all the easy crude oil prospects. Acouple of yean ago, oil was $7 a barrel, and now the price per barrel has increased to $29. Uintah Basin Standard go-he- ad 'x Moab may become gas provider Moab - The City of Moab is exploring the possibility of providing natural gas service to area residents. The subject was discussed in executive session following the regular City Council meeting. The planned takeover ofUtah Gas by QuestStar opens the door for Moab to bid on purchasing natural gas service in the area, should they decide to do so. The city does not yet know whether it could provide cheaper natural gas service than Utah Gas or QuestStar, but the Moab City Manager said, Some municipalities have become service providers. In a 1980 court case, the Utah Public Service Commission gave municipalities right of first refusal after several communities expressed interest in purchasing existing electrical service in their area. Moab city officials say the city is just looking into the possibil- ity and no decision has been made. Times Independent Job cuts blamed on environmentalists Gunnison - The President of Satterwhite Log Homes recently announced the forced layoff of nine more employees from its Gunnison mill. This distasteful move is forced upon us because of our inability to get the logs ofTthe Manti-L- a Sal Mountain, Sam Satterwhite told the mill staff. He said he was a man who would rather fight than back up but admitted that the layoffs were a direct result of the Clinton roadless initiative and a recent lawsuit filed by several environmental groups asking the Forest Service to prevent the sale of dead standing timber on the Bouth Manti. In January this mill had 52 employees, today were down to 24 and for no good reason, said Satterwhite. He said the company is backlogged when it comes to orders. If we werent selling our product, then I could see a need for a layoff, but we cant keep up with the sales, he said.
