Gallup, NM Joe Mission lmpossible:2 stars Tom Cruise (PG-1- 3) - The line of people waiting for a Navajo Code Talker to autograph their GI Joe Talking Navajo Code Talker action figure stretched across the Gallup WalMart recently. More than 700 talking Navajo Code Talker dolls have been shipped to the Gallup store. The muscular talking Navajo Code Talking action figure is authentically clothed in a standard issue World War II U.S. Marine Corps uniform. The action figure also has a camouflage covered helmet, web belt, hand phone set, back pack radio, Ml rifle and dog tags. The GI Joe Code Talker speaks seven different phrases from phrase s in the Navajo language, which is followed by their English translation. Navajo Code Talkers earned fame in World War II, beginning at the battle of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles in history. The Navajo code baffled the Japanese and led to a decisive victory. There are estimates that there are about 150 surviving code talkers. When the war ended, the U.S. military instructed the code talkers to continue to keep the code a secret, and that's what they did, even from their families. It wasnt until 1968, when the military decided that the code talkers would never be called upon again, that America learned about the wars last unsung heroes. Navajo Times 12-in- ch La PlataEmpire merger short circuited Durango - The proposed merger of La Plata and Empire rural electrical associations was short circuited because of controversy overload. Cortez-base- d Empire Electric has put the year old consolidation offer on hold because of all that is going on in La Platas territory, said Neal Stephens, Empire's general manager. In the past year, Durango-base- d La Plata has been surrounded by controversy over its efforts to diversify. A lawsuit challenges the legality of La Platas sponsorship, in the form of front money and loan guarantees, to help found REANET, telecommunications company. Empire also helped Inc., a form REANET, but is not named in the suit. Stephens said Empires board of directors didnt think it would be able to garner the 23 support of membership votes needed to make the consolidation happen. If there was a fourth person, the only one it could have been was this guy, but personally Im not convinced he was involved, said an FBI agent based in Durango. We cant go back and verify it now, because he is dead," said the officer. The mans identify was not released by officials. The three fugitives - Robert Mason, Jason McVean and Allen Pylon - allegedly stole a water truck on May 29, 1998 and then shot Claxton after the officer spotted the truck in Cortez. The three then allegedly stole a flatbed truck and abandoned it near the Utah border, setting off a massive manhunt throughout the Four Corners area. The FBI agent said it was only speculation that there was a fourth man involved. But obviously we cant rule it out at this point. The man, who lived just outside of Durango, died after accidentally mixing alcohol and drugs. During the nine days the well was out of service, the citys major water users were contacted and asked to cut down on consumption. The well was soon back into service, but during the down time the fact hit home that the city needs an additional water supply. We have five wells, and when the third went down, even by producing the remaining four, we still cant keep up, said a water official. past-produci- ng CALL FOR UT 84511 SHOW TIMES 435T678T28.15 Fri Sat Mon June 19 17 16 (9G935) ffnraEgni? ifejstfg9g8 Mt!oii!isvii 7:30 pm See It At The MOVIES!
