Show FIL chassi admits As assignation assi nation of ex governor of idaho implicates all those now under ar rest and others include ng J L ns tells the story of twenty ax murders as result of consa boise idaho governor gooding en sunday night issued a statement with respect to the assassins a alon case in which he says I 1 want to state officially that harry orchard has made a full confession confes bion as to the manner and motive of the as of ex governor steinen berg telling of the plans made and giving the names of those making them the assassination of ex governor which occurred at hia own gate on the evening of december 1905 was the third attempt that orchard made against his life this confession was made to cap tain james it included a history of his life from his early boy hood up to the time of his arrest in that confession orchard implicated all those under arrest and others include ng J L simpkins he told the story of twenty six murders the results of conspiracies in which all the accused parties were interested when this story is given to the public I 1 believe t will be the greatest narrative of crime which the world knows there has never breen any doubt as to the truth of orchard s confes sion among those who are familiar w th the crimes committed in idaho and colorado and charged to the inner circle of the western federation 0 miners I 1 attribute orchard s confes slon to the great brain of james me who has beai employed by the state to run down the murderers of ex governor I 1 davd seen orchard myself since this con bession was made he told me that no promises of clemency or reward had been held out to him by mccar land or anyone else mr was aided in his work by orchard s parly training in his boyhood the bible was read night and morning by his parents the impression of the early days came up and smote his conscience when he was brought face to face with his god he told me that he believed in a supreme being and a hereafter and that now his one thought was to make his peace with bis maker the finding of the bomb at judge goddard s gate and many other things which will later be made known at the trial have proved th truthfulness of orchard s confession beyond all question to those familiar with his story the state desires to secure justice there is no thought ot punishing the innocent or waging war on any labor organization the as of ex governor steinen berg a grave crime against the state of idaho was committed As its ex I 1 felt it my duty to bend every energy toward the discovery of the guilty parties and their fitting pun ashment I 1 wish to announce that I 1 have withdrawn the offer of 5 reward made by the state for the punish ment of the guilty parties and have advised that the parties who had of rewards to do likewise they have agreed to and today there is not a single dollar of reward offered for the conviction of the murderers of A reward of 1000 is now offered by us for information leading to the arrest of J L simpkins and this is the only reward now offered in connection with the sheun inberg assassination my reabon for withdrawing the re ward and advising others who had offered rewards to withdraw them is that I 1 felt that no detective assoria alon or anyone else Is entitled to the reward offered by the state harry orchard was arrested before any de were on the ground on antor matlon secured by a committee of citizens ot caldwell assisted by a few of us who left boise on the special train a few minutes after the assassin nation of ex governor we were all the friends and neigh bore of the ex governor and J am sure their services will always be kemem bared with gratitude |
