I certainly agree we should do all in our power to protect the lives of good people. For these and other good reasons we have resorted to use of Security Guards in many places. A Security Guard is a person I have learned to accept as a dependable person who is honestly trying to prevent unlawful acts of any kind by any person or group of persons. I have always believed such Guards were dedicated to the service of the public they serve and should be provided with the means of performing their duty with proper equipment to enable them to do so in any severe situation. In view of this reasoning, I would believe that a properly trained and dedicated guard would never use a side arm to injure anyone unnecessarily. We have laws in effect presently to make carrying a gun to a school, church or public building for the purpose of doing harm to another, a criminal act. We expect our Security Guards to be able to protect that which they are assigned to do. If we make a safe haven of any place by placing unarmed guards on duty at that place, any criminal being intent on injuring just anyone, would be delighted to know he would not have to worry about facing a gun himself. He would be able to dispose of anyone, or thing, that might deter him in his plans. As one of a social community of presumably civilized people in the good State of Utah it is beyond my ability to think we would expect a policeman or security guard to act on our behalf if we pass laws prohibiting that person the right to have at hisher immediate disposal the tools to properly and sensibly perform hisher work enforcing the many laws established without believing heshe could protect hisher wn life also. The unfortunate situations that have occurred in our Nations schools recently surely prompt us to try to prevent any recurrence at any place. It does not require us as a government to pass laws that might possibly make it easier for such things to continue happening. Please do not permit political or social pressure to induce you to allow the passage of any additional laws that might make it easier to happen. Our Founding Fathers realized the necessity of having a well armed militia and provided means for it in our Constitution. Let us not forget that we still live in a jungle, even though it is a far different jungle than our Founding Fathers provided means to combat. We still need those saint means in our jungle today. Proper education? SSANJUANjmEATERj. WILLIAM L. SAN JUAN BUILDING SUPPLY Honor Roosevelt by supporting roadless initiative Dear Editor: I have a friend who proudly keeps a picture of Teddy Roosevelt in his room next to a mounted moose head. Like Teddy, hanging living my friend is a liberal Republican, an avid hunter and a lover of the outdoors. When I asked him why he keeps a portrait of our late roughriding president, he smiled and said that Teddy understood nature and had guts. He could see the importance of wilderness and the necessity to protect it. He pondered a moment and then continued. And, frankly, he had a vision, dont you agree? Im no fan of the federal government, but he had a mission. From his army days in the Spanish-America- n War to his presidential years, he went after what he wanted. He faced his fears. I have to admire a leader who can take the reigns and do that. His words rang true with me. Whether or not you like the man or not, you have to admit, Teddy had tremendous vision. And guts. And one of the gutsier things that he did during his tenure as President was the development of the National Forest system. Teddy emphasized that he wanted the active and zealous help of every man enough to realize the impertance of the nations welfare in the future of preserving the forests. ..The forest is for use, and its users will decide far-sight- ed its future. And now, just as then, Americans still need the active and zealous help of every person who sees the need to protect roadless areas from development. Today, users of our national forests are faced with an initiative instilled with as much vision and controversy as Roosevelts National Forest System expansion: the Clinton Administration's Roadless Area Proposal. It will be up to the people, the users of the national forests, whether or not this proposal succeeds. If the people support the proposal, chances are it will. If the majority of Americans oppose it, then it will go down in flames. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Alliance, an organization comprised of sportsmen and women, released its findings that over 80 of anglers and hunters nationwide support the Administrations roadless area protection proposal. Lets honor Teddy Roosevelt by supporting the Roadless Area initiative. Mac Blewer, Wyoming Outdoor Council 1050 S MAIN BLANDING 435 - 678 - 2000 SOUTHEAST UTAH LAND USERS S.U.L.U.
