Show international publicity. Cal was never able to effectively overcome the onslaught by Mary boy. Again on the personal level, I had one big and unexpected broadside from Cal At a gathering of the state BLM Advisory Council in Price, he called me a "saboteur" He was apparently referring to my alleged, but false, role in the destruction of heavy equipment near Fry Canyon. I had previously been investigated for that episode. That accusation was leveled at me, when he was advised that the BLM National Advisory Council meeting was to be held at our Pack Creek Ranch. He vowed, even though he was a member of that very board, not to come. And he didn't One of the greatest of all indignities was heaped upon him when his home was raided forces looking for illegally acquired ancient artifacts. This intrusion was certainly federal by seemingly an act of desperation and possible revenge. I disliked the way it was carried out. Clearly, it seemed a political vendetta against him. I reminded him personally and others publicly that rural artifact collections, valid or not, by individuals was but a drop in the bucket compared with the destruction of thousands upon thousands of ancient sites caused by the construction of Glen Canyon dam by the federal government None of those guiding-ligprinciples that caused that calamity were ever prosecuted. Then why Cal Black? earth-movi- heavy-hande- ng MANUDY AY &wr MAYHG HD d, ht What his adversaries often failed to accomplish, Cal's bout with cancer accomplished. Even though seriously ill. Cal attended an advisory council meeting in VernaL Jim Stiles and I made a trip there to listen to and oppose the proposed Book Cliffs road. Cal made his usual plea - the need for more roads. He stammered somewhat, spoke haltingly, and his delivery was not as polished as in previous times, but he still was eloquent in making his points. After the meeting, I spoke to him briefly and wished him God's speed. He just looked at me, staringly for a few moments, shook my hand, and nodded his head as if to say, Tt was a great fight" That was all I left feeling a deep respect for the man. That was the last encounter we had. He died shortly after. His influence, "Cal Blackism," continues. The Utah Association of Counties is still heavily under his influence. And even today, after his death, many county officials throughout the state continue to try to emulate him - to be Cal Black clones. It's a kind of "me-too-" syndrome among the radical conservatives. To all you out there, all I can say is, you're no Cal Blacks. There was only one. My Pledge to You As Mayor more responsive city government 2. Strengthened relations with Grand County 3.
