Show PAGE 35 THE ZEPHYROCTOBER 1994 I hear another unmistakable sound of October in Utah: the boom of a rifle shot, echoing and reverberating off the hillsides for several seconds. It happens season. I decide that I have seen all I need to to be the opening day of I see in upper Currant Creek, so hustle back to the truck and head out I remember 1983 and the sounds of autumn in the foothills of the Uinta Mountains. high-power- ed "J elk-hunti- - I ng It is the autumn of 1986. Grouse whortleberry shrubs form a soft carpet on the floor of the spruce-fi- r forest in the Shale Creek basin of the Uinta Mountains. A close relative of the blueberry, these shrubs are short and bright green, even the stems. Closer inspection reveals that each small broomlike shrub is loaded with tiny red berries. I immediately follow my unwritten rule 1 of fieldwork, which is that the discovery of grouse whortleberries takes precedence over work. I crouch down, pluck off a few berries and pop them in my mouth. Immediately the flavor of blueberries -- my most favorite of fruits engulfs my taste buds. I search for more, selecting the ripest, plumpest, juiciest ones I can find. Now it is time for the grand finale : I spend about five minutes picking a whole handful, a hundred or more. It is tough not to eat in this regard. Finally I them as they are picked, but I exercise great pop the whole handful in my mouth at once and experience about five seconds of pure gustatoiy delight. Then, and only then, do I return to my fieldwork duties -until I find the next patch of grouse whortleberries. I remember 1986 and the taste of autumn in the Uinta Mountains. i .i - self-discipli- ne i -- IJ EDWARD ABBEY: A Voice in the Wilderness Edward Abbey may Monkey Wrench Gang is remem- be gone, but his ability to inspire outrage, laughter and bered by his closest family and friends. passion in the Rare film clips, defense of wilderness remain. Our older son is in Mrs. McNeely's third grade class at Red Rock Elementary School in Moab, Utah. Thirty years from now, when most of his childhood memories have faded, perhaps he will be able to recall a few fragments from his Moab Outdoor Education field trip this autumn. Perhaps he will remember our recent trip to Geyser cub, probably Pass, where we saw a mama black blear with her brown-fuzzba- ll fattening up on ripe gooseberries. It doesn't really matter to me if he remembers these things or not. My hope is that our little family of four enjoys and appreciates the sensations that autumn provides for us right now, and every year. The memories will take care of themselves. ' . - Thoreau.
