Show THE ZEPHYRMAY 1991 To return to the old growth forest Issue, I have another picky little point to make about forests and their Importance as C02 removers. You may have heard this In reference to Brazil and the clear-cuttigoing on there. Much as America was opened up by pioneers as they cut and cleared their way west, local Brazilians are trying to Improve their lot In life and are not really considering environmental Issues or addressing world C02 levels. They're cutting down the tropical rain forest at an accelerating rate. The loss of habitat and destruction of plant and animal species, many of which aren't even named let alone studied, Is cause for concern. But the quick loss of even more trees from the planet has been considered to be a factor In the C02 from the atmosphere as part of the photosynthesis cycle. But In reality, loss of Brazilian rain forests are not proven to result In less C02 removal from the atmosphere, or at least enough to be concerned about Right now, statistical data Is being obtained In the rain forests, to try and determine what the actual oxygen production and C02 uptake Is In these tropical ecosystems. The measurements have not been done long enough to make predictions. In fact the Information and measurements we do have are for temperate zones like here In the United States, where It Is scientific fact that climax forests and mature trees are not very active C02 removers. Just like other old things, mature trees have a slower metabolic rate than young trees. An acre of old growth trees will take 5 to 7 tons less C02 out of the atmosphere than will an acre of actively growing young trees. It follows that If we want to remove that C02 from the atmosphere, we should be focussing on planting new trees and new shrubs everywhere. This should be a priority especially In the world's polluted cities and urban areas, to help the air which has the most problems. And here In the U.S. reforestation should be actively pursued by the U. S. Forest Service, with the cooperation of environmental groups. Actually, maybe the folks Involved havent done so badly In managing things In the since forests In America are continuing to Increase In size, with annual wood growth past, ed and growing stock Increasing substantially since the 1920s.
