Show THEZEPHYRAPRIL 1991 the beginning; we now grow angry when other more successful speculators come here with their power and money, and their own Ideas of success, and buy us out, or buy our neighbors out, or buy out other speculators who have been here letting their property appreciate. If only we had never let them come In the first placet They show up expecting literacy, bookstores, music, art (Never mind the list of contributors to the music festival: we know who they are. Let them take their music back, and their New York musicians.) We say It might have been O.K. back then. But It Is different now. What Is different? We are here. We have congregated In the sort of places advertised In Outside. (Some of us write for Outslde.1 A few years ago you could hear us gloating about how hip our places were. Dateline: Santa Fe, Moab, Sun Valley, Missoula, Jackson, Tellurlde. Why didnt we Immigrate to Independence, Thermopolls, Calao, Idaho Falls, Tonapah? There are too many people here. There's no longer any place where people cant be found, says one of our friends who ranches. But so It has always been; now It's Just more so. The West has always been urban and we have all come from cities. Which means our hypocrisy Is different and darker than the one we admit to. Our hypocrisy Is about our xenophobia, our racial and class hatred. We fear that we are trading, against our will, one kind of colonial status for another, when we are the colonizers. We think we are natural, and have no Ideology. But people who think they have no Ideology are dangerous to themselves and others. We are out of control because we do not know ourselves. PAGE 11 Back to the Soda Fountain say they are seducers, like those Commies In the 1950s. Our way of life Is threatened by their seductive and evil Ideas; our sons and daughters will never be able to resist But what, we might ask Instead, In us Is vulnerable? These cosmopolitans who extinguish our light (destroyers) are like the new western historians who will not allow us our Illusion that there Is a last best place, or allow us to pretend that rational management of the land has worked, or allow us even the Illusion of our elusive wilderness we believe It Is out there, but what they mean Is not what we know In our bones and blood, we say. The cosmopolitan Is a cultural relativist, a stranger, an outsider. He might be the man who corrupted Hadleyburg. He recognizes our provinciality. He knows we are a part of the world. He knows the simple truth we abhor: Money talks. He can buy most of us. We He will. Pretty soon we realize that we shouldnt ought to go around lobbying for national parks or declaring wilderness, but go back to cutting trees, running cattle, stripping minerals, mining water, building our Uranium Motel, with Atomic Slots. If we all get some open sores on our faces and hands, murder a few members of the grey wave around Gunnison like we used to do hippies, run a few Volvo drivers out of Plnedale, then we can have the place to ourselves again. Somehow we screwed up: we failed to get money; we should have been better at It when we had our chance to rape the West Michael Peter Cohen lives In Cedar City, Utah. He gets along as well as can be expected. Local Daily News 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 6:30 PM DID YOU SEE... Bricks the at the Equestrian Center and Minit Lube? Fight over the Jeep Safari Permit?
