Show 0 The Sampler, Sept 19, 1985 Emotional abuse of children is, prevalent this time of year parents should encourage not discourage young ones in school a topic we ear and read about daily, yboth on television and in the newspaper. The things we hear and read about are usually the results of a child dying from injuries suffered at the hands of "loving," or not so "loving" parents. Occasionally we read about a child discovered being held captive in a closet. These are severe cases and it is very important that we hear about them. There is also an important area of child abuse that we hear little about. That is emotional ti Child abuse is abuse.. Emotional abuse is usually a part of physical abuse; however,' it is possible to have one without the other. Emotional abuse may be anything from berating to ig- noring your child. The area of, emotional abuse we are focusing on in this article is one that is more prevalent during this time of year. With school starting and child.- . plish. Students' expectations are relatively easy. They want to go and socialize and squeeze as little "education" as possible in during the breaks - between recess and lunch. Teachers would like for every student to absorb every bit of knowledge they have been asked to teach. Parents' expectations of school vary with the level of what is expected of their "grass is green Mary, not co- - purple," or, "You didn't lor within the lines, Mary." What started out as a happy occasion has turned into an extremely discouraging one. Sixth grader, Billy marches home and triumphantly announces that he has been selected first clarinet in the B Band. He suddenly feels deflated As parents, all of us have certain expectations of our children. We all want them to be the brightest, most : pressing them to our children is important. If we all told our children, to simply do their best there would be no point; to when met with comments like, Why aren't you in the A Band?" The old saying, "you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar" really holds true with child- this article. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.: One way parents handle expectations of their child' ren is to be dissatisfied with anything the child does. Parents will say they do this to the child. encourage ' A small child rushing home to mom and dad with the first place ribbon on her drawing can only be discouraged by comments like, ren. Praise or positive reinforcement usually spurs children onward ' and up- ; ward. Encourage your children, dont discourage them. Another way that expecta- - set the expectations for their children far above theirca-pabilitie- s what emerges is tions may bring about emo- . . and pleasant, fastest, and on feel-" on. All of us have these exings. How we go1 about parents, teachers, and stu- dents getting geared up for the new school year, now is a good time for all' of us to reflect on just what we all expect education to accom- ' . tional abuse is by parents having excessive or unrealistic expectations of their not a bright capable child but a child with a low self Aildren. I overheard an argument ' image who believes he is oetween two people the other day. When the argument ceased getting anywhere one of the parties well. In some cases parents will feel like they are succeeding in. this type of. "encouragement." A discussion with the burst out crying.'. The exasperated other party shoutedr "Now you are acting just like a child." The statement was a bit comical because it was a father shouting at his obviously seven or eight year old child. . As parents we want our children to grow up quickly. We want our children to be child's teacher will usually reveal a child who is doing well scholastically but is socially andor emotionally limited. Making children believe they are inadequate or unsatisfactory is emotional abuse and causes scars just as real as cigarette burns or belt bruises. If you are doing this to your child please stop: If you need it, help is available. It shouldn't hurt to be a kid. Missile Ranger responsible, mature, levelheaded, and serious. In other words we want them to be little adults. This is unrealistic. When parents , Chemicals do more harm to the eyes than to any other part of. the body.
