Show 10 The Sampler, Dec. 7, 1984 Dugway HSglhi by Fiona McHardy The high school girls roundballers are back on the court, dribbling, passing, shooting, and getting excited about the new season. Blake Daniels is the hew head coach this year. He has the girls running hard to get them in shape for hopefully another successful season, in the history of Dugway girls basketball. Coach Daniels was last years assistant -- coach, so he knows what to expect, and how to lead the girls toward their winning capabilities. This year he is being assisted by Miss Linda Sessions, a recent graduate of BYU. Coach Sessions will be mainly concerned with JV program. There are 20 girls alto gether playing for the Lady Mustangs this year. None of the starters of last year have' returned, and many of the girls are new to organized basketball. On the team there is a considerable .amount of talent, just waiting to be refined. Through the diligent guidance' of coaches Daniels and Sessions, the girls have high on She court are back basketball girls hopes to come through with a winning season. Starting on the Varsity team this year are: Amy Deuel, a senior, Monica Joiner, a hot little junior, Jalean Mallet, the fiesty point guard, a sophomore, and Helen Sherratt and Sonja Brown, both key rebounders and hustling sophomores. The team has quite a few reserves willing to pop in the game at a moments notice. JoDee Painter, the only other senior, Stacie Phillips, Megan McHardy, Cindy Horton, and Lisa Bullcreek, all sophomores round out the rest of the. varsity team. Many of these girls also play on the JV team. The other JV members include two so- phomores, Veronica and Abby Bullcreek, while the rest are freshmen: Candi Kelly, Diane Sherratt, Lillian Valdez, Ginia GilEng-stro- m, christ, Suzie Holman, Laurie Cunningham and Melissa Cooty. As you can see it is quite a young team, but if they work together they will be able to overcome their Coach Daniels said, "We have a good team, even though it is young. By the end of the season these girls will get used to the game and be good players. I think it will be a contest between Dugway and North Summit again this year for the region championship. The Lady Mustangs have already had the opportunity to test their skills against two teams. On November 20, the Grantsville Cowboys came to town. The Cowboys started off with two major advantages. First, they are a more experienced team and second, they are a larger school. These, added to the fact that it was the first game of the season, gave the They passed the ball around, waiting for the open shot. It was obvious this time that, slowly, their nervousness was apparent as they didnt play up to their capabilities. There 7. were also many opportunities for fast breaks as Jalean Mallett and Monica Joiner continually put pressure on the ball and stole it several times. Cindy Horton, Sonja Brown and Helen Sherratt were great under the boards as they pulled down quite a spirit and a little less fear. The playing was markedly improved, but the Cowboys lead was too much to catch up. The Mustangs ended their first game in defeat, 53-2- 5. The next contest was against Intermountain Christian on November 27. This is a new school up in Salt Lake. The Lady Mustangs were good and ready for this game. From the very start few rebounds each. By the end of the first half the Mustangs had built up a sizeable lead. During the second half the reserves got in quite a bit of playing time. The boys are out pounding the ball on the hardwood and working hard to defend their 1A state championship' title. The Mustangs played their first game of the season on Saturday, December 1; against the Roberts. The practice paid off as the Mustangs won the ball game 67-6Starting for the Mustangs 0. this year are seniors: Gary Smith, Robert Argyle, and Rob Solomon. Solomon is the only returning starter of last year. Filling the other starting positions are junior, Darin Byes and Tony Moe a sophomoreat point guard. The game against the Indians was not an easy one. The Elko players were large and tough on the boards. But this was just one quality the Indians had that the Mustangs had to overcome in order to gain victory. The guards had quick hands that Elko. Smith and Argyle tied for the honor of high scorer for the evening. Both of these big men sunk the ball time after time for 22 points each. These two were also hot on the boards leading in re- bounds. Tony Moe is the little man up top. He calls the plays and keeps the pace of the game going. Moe added seven points to the Mustang effort. Solomon and Byes were high in assists as well as scoring, as they added ten and four points respectively. Jef Liddiard came off the bench and rounded off the Mustang score with two points. Gus Magann, Larry Cole, and Jerel Johnson also got some playing time in the first game of the season. The other: members of the var- sity team are: Keith Warren, 42-2- 8. Southern Utah State College. Marianne Wilde is playing at the College of Eastern Utah. Kathy Keetch is going to school' at the University of Utah, Vicky Perkins has moved to Flori- da, and Fiona McHardy will soon be leaving Dugway to attend Brigham Young University. These girls last year won the Consolation Scott Groharing, Ron Wilson, and Dana Gardner. Tlie Indians were exciting stole the ball from our boys many times, as well as a tough offense. It was a game of turnovers for both teams. The Mustangs continued to hustle throughout the game. They played a full court press much of the game causing alot of problems for together and closed the gap, so for the last three minutes the coach put his starters in again, and the ladies won Hiis season will be one for rebuilding: The starters of last year have all gone their various ways.
