They were drunk drivers. The holiday season is just around the corner. People .are planning their holiday and law en-- . forcement agencies are al-- . ready predicting the death and injury tolls. The Department of the Armys Holiday Drunk Driving Campaign, Dec. 15 to Jan. 7, is aimed at reducing vehicle accidents involving alcohol. The campaign has two themes, says Major Bob Baldwin, of the Military Police Operations Agency at the Office of Army Law Enforcement. One is to enlist the help of soldiers to report drunk drivers to law enforcement agencies, and the other is to make soldiers aware that military police will apprehend drunk drivers. Currently 34 states have citizen drunk driver reporting programs. The Army get-togethe- rs, . hasnt mandated such a pro- gram, but many installations have developed their .own. "Weve selected the Mary-- . land State Police Citizen Drunk Driver Reporting Program as a representative program of the 34 states and are distributing, copies of it and a Department of Trans portation pamphlet called "A Guide for Detecting Drunk Drivers at Night to all Army law enforcement Accelerating or decelerating rapidly; And having the headlights off at night. If a driver or pedestrian sees a possible drunk driver, says Baldwin, he should take down the license number and location and call the civilian or military police. People are urged not to take the law into their own hands. In addition to the 80 sold-- . iers who died last year, another 290 were injured and countless more spent their holidays, or at least part of . agencies. Baldwin noted. How can an average person detect a drunk driver,, especially at night? Police agencies, says Baldwin, have determined 20 indicators that drivers are probably intoxicated, Turning with a wide dius; ra- Straddling center of the lane marker; Appearing to be drunk; Almost striking an object or vehicle; Weaving; Driving on other than a designated roadway; Swerving; Driving at a speed lower than 10 mph below the posted limit; Stopping without cause in a traffic lane; Following too closely; Drifting; Tires on the center line or lane marker; Braking erratically; Driving into opposing or crossing traffic; Signaling inconsistent with driving actions; Slow response to traffic signals (sudden stop, delayed starts); Stopping inappropriately (other than in lane); Turning abruptly or illegally; Look out!! Your July issue prints page after page telling us all what we really know. . . that seat belts save lives!! A law for front seat folks only in USA, would save around 8,000 lives annually!
