We need a minimum of 6 volunteers daily for half-hoblocks, 30 minutes each day, from Monday through Thursday, 12:30 to 1 and Friday from 9:00 to 9:30. Please 30 minutes one day per week!!! "People are not yet -minded in this county, said after wading Gary a mountain of ordithrough nances and licensing procedures, "Well have to do a little educating of the public. Since this is National Education Week, let's take a peek at some of the history, of auction- auctioneering. Auctions have been with us a very long time. Ancient Greece and Turkey had established auctions long before "the world became round. The earliest auction in America was held in New Amster- dam, New York in 1662. From there, the art spread westward, and included slave and tobacco auctions. Remember the old cigarette commercials where the auctioneer was enthusiastically selling tobacco? The commercial is not used anymore, but tobacco is still sold by auctions today. The title of Colonel is ac-- : corded auctioneers in America. This dates back to the Civil War days when contraband was sold by an Army Officer of at least a colonel's designa- - ever paid at an auction for a manuscript. Gary got his start in auc- tion. He was looked upon as a leader among men. Today there are over 6500 . ar (NAA). 84-year-o- ld two-pag- . tioning after getting out of the Navy in 1967. He began a two-yeapprenticeship in Pennsylvania while also working the extra list on the Bessemer Lake Erie Railroad. There wasn't time for both, so he set aside auctioning until Feburary of this year. He took military leave and attended Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, North Carolina. UDon comDletion. he was awarded the title of Colonel. Gary emphatically states that hes in the auctioneering profession because it's fun. Last week he sold a framed picture post card of Brigham Young and 21 of his wives to a Protestant congregation. The bid reached $19 and came to members of the National Auctioneers Association There have been many rich and exciting experiences in the auction profession NAA member, Dennis N. Storey, planted the Canadian Flag, sipped champagne and held an auction with seven bidders, all at the North Pole. That's right the genuine, honest to goodness North Pole. Storeys group of seven included a Texas lady lawyer, a California heart surgeon and an woman from Florida. A bottle of Crown Royal whiskey was auctioned to a consortium of seven buyers for $100. Auctioneer Storey believes his North pole auction to be the most northerly auction ever. To an interested buyer, the amount of cash one pays for an item makes little difference as long as he has the e cash. A handwritten letter in which Ronald Reagan defended Frank Sinatra was sold for $12,500, a record for a letter by a living person. In London, Armand Hammer, the American industrial-- ' ist and art collector, bought the Leonardo da Vinci notebook "of the Nature, Weight and Movement of Water for $5,126,000, the highest price a woman, brought the final bid up to $22.50. Gary has done several charity auctions. Some of the most unusual items he sold was EKG equipment for the Primary Childrens Hospital. He couldn't get a bid until he convinced the crowd that it was good for getting fishing worms out of the ground with its electric shock. Gary is in partnership with Glenn Short, president of the Utah Auctioneers Association, from Midvale; Paul Christensen from Lehi; and Gary Manning from Provo. They are affiliated with "Short and Associates. Short and Associates are currently booked with auc- tions throughout the holidays. Garys wife, Jolene, is working along with her husband marking merchandise a a standstill. There-wasilence. He said, "Why, thats not even a dollar a wife. One lady, after a little thought and. reflection onthe true worth of s : and clerking. They hope to in- clude the whole family in business in the not too distant future.
