Show V i f a pntts vF THE SAMt'LEH 15. 1981 Friday. May T eclli -- TIIE dispute stems from a tight game between the two on the mens final . . 4, 5, 1-- 6. . I Dugway netters win Region, go for Escort MAAF, Spikers, Oinks win volleyball titles Well, its finally over. After five weeks of spikes, throws, sets, carries, serves, foot faults, dinks, jumping into the net, digs, balls bouncing through the rafters, knee burns and controversy the intramural volleyball league season has come to a close. OF THE nine mens teams Tech Escort M AF proved to be the elite of the league, finishing the season with a 7-- 1 record. However, there was a tight battle for the runners-u- p honors. 2 and Air Force Gilmores, MP 2 all finished with identical 5--3 records. Because of the three-wa- y tie for second place there had to be a tournament to determine how the season would end. last Friday they all met in the tourney. The Air Force received a first round bye through the luck of the draw, with the Gilmores to face MP2. THE FIRST match was fairly close, with Gilmores wining the first and third games, avenging an earlier loss during the regular season. They then defeated the Air Force 2 team in easy fashion, winning in two straight games'. Gilmores thus ended the season in second place with the Air Force third and the M Ps fourth. WINDING UP the bottom half of the standings were N1P 1 at 4-- Air Force's 1 and 3 at 3-- the Headquarters team at 2-- 5 and Chem Lab at There was some dispute over a game between Headquarters and the ChcnvLah but sources from both sides admit that the dispute is silly. A Chem Lab spokesman who would like to remain anonymous said, If the doggone game means that much to them, let em have it. 1 night of play. The two teams had split the first two games and were involved in Oheated rubber game. With the game at match point for Headquarters, what looked to be the winning shot was called back because someone had fallen into the net. With this, the point was played over giving the Chem Lab second life. THIS CI1ANGE of events turned the momentum in their favor and they i came back to take the match. Hie controvery is over whether or not the game had been called or not. League officials decided that since the game in question could not be replayed that they would call it a tie. Other than this one disputed game the season ran almost flawlessly thanks to the expert refereeing of George Bruce and Sherri Lindberg. TO ROUND out the rest of the volleyball there was the womens and mixed leagues. It was a tight race between the Spikers and the High School teams with only one game separating the two. The Snikers finished at 6-- 2 with the High School at 5-- In last place was the Air Force who finished the season at 7. The mixed league was the only one where a team dominated throughout the competition. The Dinks ended the season with a 6-- 1 record, their only loss being a forfeit. The Chem Lab finished second at 3-- 4 with the MPs bringing up the rear at 2-- State today . Steve Bruce became Dugway s first ever Region 11 tennis champion when he defeated both his opponents at Park City last Friday. .
