Show . I .... Editorials Events THE SAMPLER 2 Friday, Jan. 30, 1981 president Carters voice broke. The actions from America demonstrate to the rest of the world how much we value human life.. We should all be proud of our country. And while all that was taking place, we watched the changing ofthe guard in Washington - a new President replacing another from a different party. Both the President and Mrs. Reagan were overcome by emotion. A proud moment for the State of Utah. The highlight of the Super Bowl? Well, since I was betting on the Eagle, it was Mrs. Vince Lombardis answer to the newsman who asked her what Vince would think about her flipping the coin to start the game. She said, If he is looking down from up there, he would ask what the hell is that woman doing on the playing field! Overheard: A seven year old, irri- tated by his brothers five-yer-o- ld lack of understanding, yelled out, Gee whiz, Ive taught you everything I know and youre still stupid. Month begins Feb. 1st E-H- istory it is each year, February has been designated History Month oh the federal calendar. This years theme is "Role Models for Youth." So what? . WHITES OFTEN react to this observance with words like, Whens my month? . Im a minority tool Im a (pick one) Scotch, Irish, French, German, Polish, Italian (hyphen) American. Whens my week? WHY ARE Blacks singled out for a separate observance? Where did the n idea for History Month originate and, is it still necessary? The concept of what was then called Negro History Week was Carter Godwin Woodson. Dr. Woodson, a developed in 1926 by-Dr- . Harvard-educate- d scholar founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and Culture in 1915. The goal of this organization was to research the then largely ignored role of Blacks in American history. Much of the knowledge developed by the Association was published in scholarly books and joumals.Negro' History Week was Dr. Woodsons attempt to disseminate this newly discovered knowledge, to the general populace through public forums and celebrations. THE WEEK was to be observed in February. It was so scheduled as to include the birthday of Frederick Douglas. In recent times. Congressional resolutions and Presidential proclamations have expanded the observance to include the entire month of February. Yeah, sure but this is'1981 our phantom critic responds. All this racism stuff was taken care of in the sixties. Why do we keep having special months for people. After all, there are lots of books and films now which set the re As Afro-Americ- an . . Afro-America- Afro-Americ- Dates. . .who, or what determines those dates that, as Franklin Delano . Roosevelt put it, will live in infamy? , McDonalds restaurants put out a calendar on their paper placemans for orders to stay that leads one to pause and reflect on what dates we choose to acknowledge. this cen, FOR EXAMPLE, today, January 30 is the birthday of perhaps turys most famous president, FDR. Another date that is cm this weeks calendar is January 27, 1873. If you are a veteran of our most recent armed conflict, a glance at the silver scroll in the crater of the campaign ribbon will tell you that this is the date of our final ceasefire in Vietnam. ITS STRANGE, which dates we choose to observe with fanfare and hoopla and those we choose to let slide by unnoticed. War MiM to be big in both categories. We observe the ceasefire of WWI as Veterans Day but its former name was Armistice Day, celebrating the " end of the war to end all wars. World War II give us Dec. 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor Day, June 4, 1944 . .but when was it over? WHEN DID Korea start and end, and Vietnam? When did it endr July 4,1s the start of the American Revolution. For some strange reason; there are. many qustions that are raised when you take a look at dates. THERE IS talk about designating Jan. 21, 1981 as Americanism Day in honor of the day the 52 hostages were freed from their 444 day ordeal in D-D- Iran.. Though there may be few who refute the nobility of such a proposal today, how long would such an observance survive? Other dates we celebrate deal with famous people. i COLUMBUS DAY is one example. There is a move afoot to make Martin Luther King Jr.s birthday, Jan. 15, a national holiday. This one is meeting some strange resistance. Again, there are probably few Americans who would refute the accomplishments of this great man. PERHAPS one of the reasons is that we have taken Washington, Lincolns and Jeffersons birthday and lumped them all together as Presidents Day thus ensuring that the productivity of the nation wont be disrupted by too many presidential holidays. Veterans organizations have. successfully lobbied to get Nov. 11 reinstated as a holiday no matter where in the week it occurs, and probably until this streamlined holiday act is overturned, neither of these dates will achieve the national recognition they deserve. Why do we celebrate dates? I SUPPOSE it relates either to an instinct or a tradition to identify with or create history, or a deeply rooted desire for some type of identity. What seems to be significant and meaningful to one generation strangely does not necessarily wash with its successors. Wars were big in the first half of the century, yet who remembers the beginning and ends of the Korean Conflict or the Vietnam Conflict? - 1 V I nuud'rauthorizeaskrchoftQphulsedon probable cause. From Dr. Woodsons own uncompleted magnum texts like opus Encyclopedia Africans to more specific, theme-oriente- d Burt McKinleys Black Inventors of America, recent decades have seen a proliferation of Black history books and articles. Unfortunately, in a country growing increasingly illiterate, fewer and fewer people are able to read anything, much less dry history texts. OTHER popular media contain fewer possibilities for historical enlightenment. Tbey remain, with relatively few exceptions, obsessed with traditional stereotypes: Blacks as deprived, Blacks as famous firsts, Blacks as funny folks. Dr. Woodsons original goal, to popularize historical research, remains a v valid one. But what about the other minorities? Those referred to by politicians and pundits as ethnics - what about their months? ETHNICITY, for a lot of the assimilated grandchildren of European immigrants has become chic. With the rise of Black Consciousness and the search for roots, many felt left out. After many years of accepting American history as taught in schools and popular films, they saw the true facts being challenged. Many took this as a challenge to their and their immigrant forbeairers contributions to America. Not so. The reexamination of American history is not designed to discredit anyone. It is a critique not of the makers of history, but of the recorders. Scholars who, in the words of historian Almose A. Thompson, Jr., consciously or unconsciously, through omission or commission, have traded to discredit the accomplishments of Africans and their descendants. So, enjoy History Month. As a final note, you might want to consider that without Black inventor Garret Morgans invention of the gas mask we might not have a Dugway. By SSC Willard Smith By SSG Phil Hale .
