Show HOW MUCH SILT to FILL a RESERVOIR? Forty years after Glen Canyon Dam’s completion G with record low levels, parts of "Lake" Powell are becoming mud flats. Pees seein cece eet Aerial view of the San Juan arm of Lake Powell. May 2002 HOW MUCH SEDIMENT??? Every day, one million cubic feet of sediment flow into the Powell Reservoir and has been for 40 years. How much is one million cubic feet? It would take three dump trucks a minute, all day, 24 hours a day, NON-STOP to match the sediment flow into Lake Powell. If you took all the dump trucks that emptied their sediment load into the reservoir in a year, and lined them up, bumper-to-bumper, the line of trucks would wrap around the planet THREE times. Statistics from the Glen Canyon Institute The north end of Lake Powell at Hite. August 2002. |
