and insisted on lessons But again ' Bates had other plans She figured if she taught herself to swim by memorizing the strokes she could prove to her dad she did not need lessons after all thus spending less time in the water “I watched the Olympics very carefully especially swimming” Bates said “And 1 memorized the strokes" However Bates’ plan unfortunately backfired As a result of her hard work to avoid lessons and more specifically the water Bates was immediately placed on the beginning swim team She simply had impressed too many ' people On the swim team Bates again tried every tactic to avoid getting in the water She even mastered the art of relentless gab — talking to her coach until practice was over The more she talked the less she had to swim Hef coach soon caught oh and began employing a little manipulation him- -
