Show will be sent to china to adjust differences leading to boy cot of american goods thompson of nebraska and assistant secretary of state loomis are talked of as likely cand dates for vacant position oyster bay edwin H conger of iowa has resigned his post as ambas to mexico to take effect october 18 next and president roosevelt has accepted the resignation mr congers retirement from the diplomatic service was foreshadowed in these dispatches last week it was indicated then that he might be sent to peking as a special commissioner ot the president to adjust it possible the differences which havear lsen between this country and china over the boycott of american goods by some of the chinese commercial guilds it has not been determined definite ly yet who will succeed mr conger as ambassador to mexico but as hereto fore stated it probably will be david E thompson of nebraska now ameri can ambassador to brazil it is known that ambassador thompson desires the mexico post in connection with the appointment the name of francis loomis assist ant secretary of state has been men but it can be said pretty bitely that mr loomis will not be ap pointed his resignation as assistant secretary of state may be expected at any time it Is certain that he Is to retire from the state department but whether he will receive an appoint ment in the diplomatic service as has been suggested is thought to be some what problematical |
