Show TOWN IS WIPED OUT BY TORNADO latest estimates places the list of killed at ninety five while one hundred and fifty are injured STORM STRUCK TOWN AT NIGHT t people awakened from their slum bers only to perish amid falling build and fly ng timbers snyder oklahoma estimates made friday morning places the list of per sons killed in the tornado which struck this town wednesday at mid at about a hundred dead while persons were injured more than forty seriously ninety five persons are known to be dead several are missing and a nimber of the wound ed are in a critical condition the wounded found shelter in an ampro hospital until night when they were taken to hospitals in guth ne and oklahoma city the finan caal loss is estimated at the havoc wrought by the tornado Is complete out of a town of 1 people not more than a score of houses are intact while two thirds of the buildings are totally wrecked the storm formed south of olustee sear the texas line and took a northeast ariy course through a well settled sec alon at 8 clock it was observed by the people of snyder but the usual tunnel shaped formation was lacking and though the roar was plainly heard for some time before the storm broke many were of the opinion that it was a hailstorm A few moments of ominous calm followed and then the tornado struck tearing buildings to pieces as though they were made of paper many people who had thought to take advantage of the calm to seek refuge in cellars were caught in the streets and between buildings where some were lifted high in the air and dashed to the ground as though hurled troy a catapult while others were struck by flying debris and beaten almost beyond recognition those who re in ameir houses ter in the path of the tornado which swept across all excepting a few blocks in the southeastern corner of the town the frame structures col lapsed like egg shells burying mccu pants under the debris killing crush ing and maiming i six of the eight hotels were torn to burying many in the wreck age north ot the railroad track where many cottages ethod not one is left and the krecl age Is mostly carried away in a few moments it was all over and the air was filled with shrieks of injured mingled with cries of those who had escaped and were seeking lost ones within a short time messengers were dis patched to mountain park two and one half miles away where the news was sent by telephone to physicians and nurses were called for and relief trains were made up at mangun hobart and law ton and hurried to the scene by the frisco meanwhile the able bodied survivors in snyder were working heroically roi cally all through the night amid the most heartrending scenes A build ing was utilized tor a temporary hos pital and another used as a morgue the latter a dry goods building pro dented a gruesome appearance when day dawned with the corpses lying tier above tier on the shelves the search for bodies continued all during the day and at 6 clock at night eighty had been recovered others are being searched tor which with the casualties reported from the country will probably raise the death list to several of the injured will be added to the list of fatalities atie most pressing need Is financial organization has been perfected among the citizens and appeals were sent out to leading cities of the terri asking tor immediate help |
