Show ' Thursday March 21 2002 v f A4 The Herald Journal Our view THE NEW NORMAL i So how did soccer field name come about? L see if we got this right A Utah State University soccer field is being named after con- troversial former Athletic Director Chuck Bell but nobody seems to want to take credit for the idea? ' When contacted by The Herald Journal after news of the " naming was leaked to the Salt Lake City media earlier this month an athletic department spokesman said his office had no role in the decision to name die field after Bell However a large athletic department donor directly contradicted this story when he informed the newspaper that the naming idea first surfaced in conversations : between him and the university’s current athletic director But the donor insisted that the naming was not a condition placed on a recent cash contribution he made to USU athletics contrary to the report in the Salt Lake media But that doesn’t jibe with the ' statement of another USU spokesperson who when contacted by this newspaper verified the Salt Lake media report in its entirety He later amended that verification when told of the donor’s denial that he placed any conditions on his contribution Gosh trying to track Ijow the E Avalanche deaths a grim reminder following the action iii a sc game itself — back and forth Your view On the subject of religious beliefs To the editor An L G Hansen recently wrote a letter to the editor titled“lhis is my Jesus Christ" in which he shared his opinion as a Mormon as to who Jesus Christ is He also asked the question “Who do you think he is?” I think LG Hansen wasn’t entirely honest about the Mormon view on Christ so 1 would like to take this opportunity to share the truth with Herald Journal readers as to what Mormons really believe about Christ and God Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is hot the sole creator of the Heavens ' and the Earth (as the Bible teaches) but simply one of several co-cr-eators Although L G Hansen tries to make us believe that the Mornfons believe that Christ Was “bom of a virgin” this is quite contrary to the teachings of almost all of the Mormon “prophets” since Joseph Smith I think Mormon “Appstle” Bruce R ' McKonkie said it best when he wrote “Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers” (Mormon Doctrine pg 547) Most learned Mormons believe that God ' took Mary tabe one of his many polygamous wives before he had a ' sexual relationship with her' ' Mormons believe that Christ is the brother of Satan But not to worry r all brothers they believe that we are ' and sisters of Satan Mormons believe that the blood of Christ only atones for certain sins For example Brigham Young taught that Christ’s blood was not shed for the sin of adultery An adulterer must : -- ' ' iA Letters to the editor ' other personal essays in the Herald Journal may express opinions that do not align exactly with ' your own If you disagree please respond with a letter to the editor or contact editor Charles McCollum about a possible guest com- mentary (Phone: 752:2121 Ext 3020 cmccoOumOhjnewscom) See information box at bottom of page for more details shed their own blood to atone for that particular sin That’s odd considering that Christ himlelf forgave an adulterous woman before he was nailed to the cross Most learned Mormons believe that Christ was married and most likely even a practicing polygamist Most Christians believe that there is onjy one God Mormons believe that there are countless millions of Gods This directly contradicts the Bible For example'! am the first and I am the last and beside me there is no God is there a God beside me yea there isno God I know not any” Isa 44:6&8 Lastly even though the Mormon 1 3th Article of Faith starts by saying “We believe in being honest” the current Mormon president continues to feign ignorance' when anyone in ' the media asks him if Mormons ' teach that God was once man and that we all have the ability to one day become Gods ourselves a belief that is at the very core of Mormon doctrine Whatever happened to “We believe in being honest”? Mike Moreno Logan I don’t believe Lee acted alone To the editor: Following is an excerpt from “Mama Me and Mormonism” by Thelma Geer the granddaughter of John Lee: “For Grandpa Lee along with his portion of the booty of this priest-le- d bloody battle there were soon to be other spoils of war intangible rather than material: the heartbreaking fruits of his misguid-ed obedience to his church leaden and Brigham Young lt fell Grand-pa’s lot to be made the victim for the Mormon church to bear the shame : and blame for the whole foul priesthood-plotted and directed massacre to be the scapegoat to bear the sins and disgrace of the sordid affair for die Mormon church and to suffer as all scapegoats have the loss of family friends farm and fireside He was to spend the rest of his life wandering cold hungry aide and forsaken in hiding forl9 kmg troublous years until finally arrested and trieg by the faith-shatteri- ng r See YOUR VIEW on All By Hal Clifford o Writers ver St Patrick’s Day week- end six people died in avalanches near Brighton Utah and Aspen be explained this way: Because the and Steamboat Springs Goto traditional crucibles of war and danI’m saddened but I’m not surprised gerous manual labor are not availThose deaths are part of a grim harvest that is as emblematic of the New able to them many young American men (and some women) are taking to West as llama ranches and trophy the hills to prove themselves homes Second outdoor equipment manuWestern recreationists are being facturers have improved the technol- killed in record numbers by snow ogy of backcountry skis and slides Mote than 30 fatalities have snowboards clothing ice climbing been tallied and — most fatally — in equipment annually snowmobiles Snowmobilerx now recent years make up the largest and g including a cohort avalanche of US record 33 last fatalities last winter 17 of the 33 winter comwho died were riding snow people six to to pared s machines'' deaths eight i The third critical factor is a ji i' annually in the American faith in that hue 1980s Yet improved technology during the past Backcountry recreationists can 10 years significant i its outfit themselves with the Availing have been made in av to provide oxygen to a designed and rescue techniques safety buried avalanche victim they can technology ' Of course more people recreate in wear and use the Tracker beacon which helps searchers find die victim the West now: But something else is faster than ever they can cany light-on comThree factors have going ishovels to weight probe poles bined to produce these deadly locate and him out " dig results The adventurer can study risk foreThe first is popular media The casts On the local avalanche center’s adrenaline media — Outside magaWeb site and use his inclinometer zine ESPN-- 2 and so on d have collapsible' shovel and snow saw to cul-i developed and promoted a risk test the hazard on his chosen mounture of bigger higher faster steeper Televised events such’ as die Extreme tain He may take avalanche safety classes and follow Skiing Championship and all the precautions: ski with a part- show men and women competner dig a snow pit and construct a is natural that world a ing against Reuschblock : portrayed as little more than an He may even carry a cell phone to unpredictable gymnasium call for help and a global positioning The popularization of such undersatellite receiver to pinpoint his localeads more to takings people push ' tion themselves harder in more challengAll of this equipment and educaing environments including tion creates a false sense of security avalanche terrain Most i m a natural environment that unlike victims are young mm In t culture and technology has not chology terms this phenomenon can on the Range 1U-luri- de fastest-growin- deep-seat- ed now-ubiquit- ge CACHE COUNTY COUNCIL Darrel Lee Gfcbons —representing the north district-- 840 S 1600 West Lewiston 84320 258-52' Layne Beck —representing the northeast district— 628 E 380 South 38 SmiMeid84335 John A Hansen —representing the 56S-322- 9 south district— 252 Hynim 84319 245-658-4 LarryAnhder—representing the southeast dtotrfct — 3475 S 250 West ' : Logan 84321 753-510-4 Cory Yeates —representing Logan S 100 East ' Logan 84321 752-902-7 Kathy Robison — representing Logan district No 2— 335 N400 West Logan 84321 753-510-9 Craig Petersen —representing Logan dtetrict No 3— 1440 E 1220 752-667- 8 North Logan-8434- AUOMEP1&' ' I k I - I ' f- i s - -I nwAPXtori me hirwrmo a-ttb- v - rifecNiy IN AN AUr ttboadl Or'jOt?
