twentythree TWENTY THREE MEN IN WEST VIRGINIA MINE loss would have been much greater but for the fact that a small force was working on the sunday shift As a result of an explosion in shaft no 1 ot the united states coal coke company at wilcoe W va on sun day twenty three miners are supposed to have lost their lives and it is poa bible that the number will exceed this fifteen bodies had been recovered at last reports although a large res cue parti is at work in the mines it Is barely possible but not ely that some of the remaining entombed miners will be rescued alive the ex was of terrific force and shat windows a mile distant immediately after the shock a great num her of miners who were off duty rushed to the shaft to find great cloud of smoke and dust gushing from its mouth mothers children and other relatives were soon weeping and pleading for the rescue of those dear tto them entombed in the mine the officials or the mine were soon on the acene the dead miners thus far re covered are all italians and hungar ians the company usually work in this shaft about seventy five miners but it being sunday the men were not all in aad the small loss of life can be attributed only to this fact the unit ed coal coke company with prin cipal offices in pittsburg pa is par of the united states steel corpora lion the cause of the explosion has hot as yet been determined
