WATER TOWER NEVER USED intended for national soldiers horn which was not built located tar up on the hills to the west of lake in lake valle mass stands a water tower built about twenty years ago it Is an imitation of tha old stone mill at newport about twenty five years ago accord ug to the story the national soldiers home located at quincy was to be moved to I 1 A tract of about the tower acres was secured there occupy ing a beautiful position from which every lake in tho great chain was clearly visible plans were made for the erection of buildings the first requisite was water ac cordingly a 60 foot well was dug A to store the water was next needed and this came in the form of the old tower it was built of field stone cemented together alx were constructed with arches between and a big column in the center to support the whole above these col dumns the massive stone tank was built which would contain thousands of gallons of water an arched root was added and it was attractively set off with a weather vane shortly after the completion of the tower work on the borne was stopped and it never been renewed
