Show (IMM Tuesday April 29f 2003 A4 The Herald Journal Regional view m1 Olympic case a waste of time and money I'M JUST A SIMPLE SYRIAN iw he Circuit Court of Appeals has managed to pick open a nearly healed scab breathing new life into the Olympic bribery scandal that Utahns not to mention Dave Johnson and Tom Welch thought was safely buried in their past Nothing good can come from this Justice does not demand more than already has been done To pursue this case now would only waste taxpayer US District judge David Sam understood that two years ago when he dismissed the case His conclusion was that Welch and Johnson may have acted unethically when they doled oiut more than $1 million in cash scholarships and gifts to entice the Intpma- -' tional Olympic Committee to award the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City but they didn't violate any laws Now a three-judg- e panel of the 10th Circuit has undone that ruling and sent the case back to Utah's federal court 1 The judges apparently bought the Justice Department's argument that Welch hnd Johnson tarnished the nation's prestige which although not illegal somehow rises to a levfcl of importance that demands a trial When the case was dismissed this Olympic organizers in Atlanta Nagano and elsewhere engaged in similar tactics to lure the IOC Beyond that however the publicity surrounding the bid scandal already has led to changes that ensure it won’t happen again The IOC has altered its procedures for awarding bids No bid committee with any degree of sense would entertain the thought of offering a bribe in exchange for a vote In short both the IOC and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee made convincing reforms The Games were a success The scandal is dead and buried — and it should have stayed that way An By Homosexual acts destroy families T he first reviews are in on Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist He gets high marks for his Mr Clean image and seriousness should try to refrain from publicly blaming the victim By doing this this girl I she is have no doubt the victim has been in need of psychiatric care after her ordeal Thank goodness she is seeking that help now so that she will be mentally healthy in the future The victim may not want to return home due to the negative publicity generated by the abuser's “friends” This poor girl needs the love and support of the community and praise for coming forward Had the abuser not put himself in the situation he did with this girl he might be home with his family involved in his business and kept his good name There will always be those victims out there ie Elizabeth Smart Laci Peterson and so ' on and those accused of crimes against them who will maintain they are not guilty And there will always be those people who support the abusers who will put the blame on everyone else including the victim rather that admit their loved one or friend might be guilty I think the DA should be commended for a job well done and the citizens of Cache Valley should appreciate that when bad things happen those responsible will be held accountable ts speaking ouFagainst polygamy incest or adultery because they destroy families So does homosexual acts Senator Santorum didn't say homosexuals are had He said homosexual acts are bad and that's what we need to fight against as they effect our families It would be wonderful if more senators had the courage and moral backbone that Senator Santorum has!
