SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Dale and Plat Kimsey started back in the 1970s by storing a few extra cans of food under - the bed just in case It’s not that the Kimsey s felt there was an imminent threat of war or disaster The couple both Mormons were simply following their religious teachings “It’s something that church members are always encour-aged to do not so much in the case of disaster but just a lit- tie bit of personal prepared- ness” Pat Kimsey sari “Every time the terrorism meter goes up and they advise people to be prepared think ’Yeah we’vebeen doing that for 30 years'” Over the past two months toe national terror alert status has bounced between yellow and orange or high with new threats against the United States and then toe war on' Iraq Homeland Security Secre- tary Tom Ridge has suggested that Americans put together disaster kits with a three-da- y supply of water food medi- cine and — furiously — duct medical supplies and instruc-tions for storing water and rotating supplies (though there’s no mention of duct tape) The Mormon penchant for planning goes beyond simple common sense It has theolog- ical roots dating to church founder Joseph Smith and the religion's “law of consecra tion” which instructs follow-ers to pod their belongings to help the poor It also stems from toe church's turbulent history and the hazards of 19th century frontier life “Latter-da- y Saints like to think of themselves as trying take care of taemselves and be in a position to reach out and help others If they had ' wpplies they would likely want to share with neighbors who did not have supplies” said Richard O Cowan pro- fessor of church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University in Provo Utah Cowan keeps ample sup- plies of water whole wheat and other goods at his home in Provo “It isn’t quite a gro-eery store" he said But “my guess is we could probably survive for weeks on what we Ito - tape Mormons were way ahead of Ridge - The Church of Jesus Christ Saints’ Web site of Latter-da-y has a comprehensive checklist on basic needs for one year or one month including food have” Less than a month after the Sept 11 2001 terror attacks church President Gordon B Hinckley at toe faith’s semi- annual general conference reminded members to plan for the unexpected “Aswehavebeeacontinu- ously counseled for more than 60 years let us have some food set made dial Would sus-tain us for a time in case of Deed” said Hinckley whom many expect to make a similar call at the upcoming confer-ence in April “But let us not panic nor go to extremes" The Kimseys already learned that lesson "One of toe things we did years ago we had a pallet of freeze-drie- d food Wfe asked 'What would happen if we actually have to live on this stuff?”’ Dale Kimsey said They opened a container of ' dried milk and found that it wouldn't dissolve in water the only way to consume it was to take bites “We decided-tget toe stuff we would normally get” he said Robert Egan who serves as a Mormon stake president in Sandy said he hasn’t noticed any increased preparedness activity recently But that could be because those in his stake — an organization that encompasses many local con- gregations — took extra pre-cautions in advance of toe new millennium Having a year’s supply of necessities on hand isn’t just to safeguard against natural or political disasters he said “There are a lot of people in ' : Vy wV1- i ' t vl ri o APphotoj Dale and Pat Kimsey pose in their basement storage room in Sandy The two were colege students in the early 1970a when they first started storing food Just incase As members of the Monpon faith they heed scriptural and practical aiMce to plan ahead tor the unexpected ' this economy who have been out of work recently Their year’s supply may have saved them” Egan said While Dale Kimsey said he doesn’t believe Utah is a to1- ror target he does believe in practicality “If we are prepared we don’t have anything to worry about” he said “If you’re in a position wherp you can take care of yourself you’re in a much better position to take' care of others too” The threat of more terror attacks as a result of the Iraqi war is personal for toe Kim-- : seys One of their sons is in the Utah National Guard And two of their daughters have an apartment in toe New York City borough of Brooklyn where they witnessed toe col- lapse of the World Trade Cen- ter towers “They were in this dinky little apartment about the size of a closet They didn’t have anything” Kimsey said “So my wife went back and helped them buy supplies they could stuff under their beds too” Onto Nat: LDS Church preparedness: Federal Ready Campaign: http:wwwreadygov Methodists to debate gay issue ' ‘ WASHINGTON (AP) — The United Methodist Church’s 2004 General Conference will take up the debate over whether to change its stand against homosexual conduct despite heavy support for existing policy at the last gathering in 2000 The denomination’s Board of Church and Society has voted 2 to make another attempt to eliminate the church’s statement that “we do not condone the practice of homosexuality and consider 20-1- Pastor Continued from Cl Kreiensieck served as a mission developer in San Jose Calif He explained that his job there was to establish a church or rathn one “They had been 18 months without a pastor when I arrived It’s knocking on doors: ‘Hi I’m Pastor Kreiensieck We’re forming a new churchherein San Jose Do you have a church home?’ I’ve said that over 4000 times” lie laughed “I have support and sympathy for the LDS missionaries who knock on the doors I’ve been there and I’ve done that" After more than five years of effort the church grew from 20 to about 200 But then the dotcom bubble burst “Host 80 individuals in less ' than a year” he lamented Since the church then wasn't able to support a pastor he became available for another call which turned out to be in Logan Before his time in San Jose the national church Evangelical Lutheran Church in America asked Kreiensieck to be a military chaplain He served as a Navy chaplain for 13 years retiring as a lieutenant commander Besides his work as a chaplain his collateral duties included coordinating college and vocational programs for the sailors to pursue while at sea He was also a public affairs officer1 and produced the ship’s newsletter For 10 years befortgoing to sea he served as paslofto three churches two in California and one in Nevada H4 interned in Salinas Cahf ' with Duane Jensen “He will have been pnsenf at both my start and niy last call before retirement” said this practice incompatible with Christian teaching” The board wants this substitute: “Although faithful Christians disagree on toe compatibility of homosexual practice with Christian teaching we affirm that God’s grace is available to all” A minority of board members favored the current language and a moratorium on further debate The church and society agency will also be proposing new actions on bisexual and enthused “The people are just fantastic not just foie people in the congregation but the people in the community are great We’ve never been so warmly received” The new pastor said he takes his personal mission statement from Matthew 28:19 “Go make disciples of all nations” But he has no ' intention of being hard-nosabout it Instead he favors what he calls a “ministry of : population ami World Trade Organization rules With 83 million members the United Methodist Church is America’s second-largeProtestant body st http:wwwumc-gbcs9f- presence” “It means you're there You’re available To invite all that would like to come to educate all those that want to learn about the Christian faith and then to send those individuals out to do the same thing Your mission is to invite to nurture to send — that ‘s what I plan on doing” Services of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church are at Aspen Grove 860 N 600 East g Logan On Sundays at 8:30 am there is contemplative worship at
