Show ONE OF OUR PIONEERS among the many veterans who lie received prizes at the box elder county old folks outing to lagoon last thursday was mary E houtz w wiio 10 was the oldest pioneer lady present having arrived in salt lake city in 1848 mrs houtz was born bom in middlesex county mass august 17 1836 6 so she is now in her eightieth year she is the daughter of joseph F r palmer and mary haven her parents joined the church and moved to nauvoo about 1841 after the fearful days of mobbing wo the family with etli so many others started for the rocky mountains stopping one year at winter whiter quarters next season they started again in ali tha camany comi cami lany any that brought the brigham young family and heber C kimball family mr IV palmer at this tinia tim haf ha aha it was considered a very good outfit consisting of a wagon two yoke of oxen and one yoke of cows after traveling bome some distance mr air palmer took sick and there was no one to drive the team lut mary who was now nearly twelve years of age this she did the captain of the company assisting her when streams were to be crossed or rough hills to be climbed the company arriving in salt lake city in the fall 0 of f 1848 mrs houtz has passed thru all the early pioneer scenes the good old family bible in informs fOrras us that she was married to john S houtz a pioneer of the same year june 18 1856 by president brigham young thru this union 7 children were born to them tour four of w horn have since died in 1865 they moved to brigham city when asked to relate some of the things that she could remember from lier her childhood days in nauvoo she told in substance the following 1 I know that my parents rec received their endowments and blessings in ill the nall nai temple I 1 remember many times of hearing tile the prophet joseph smith and liis his faithful brother hyrum speak to the people but can not remember what they said and how grand and noble joseph looked on his horse we had a sister from st louis come and live at our house and she took very sick with fearful pains in her head and eyes and lad had not slept for over a week one day she asked my father to go and ask willard richards Klc hards our cousin to come and administer to her elder richards told father that lie he could noi lot gop go then as the prophet had just requested him to go with him he regretted that he could not go and said 1 I cannot go and bless the sister but 1 I will bless my cane take it to her and tell her to rub her eyes and head with it father brought the cane it was used as directed and the suffering doman fell asleep and du dij not awake until the next day when all tin the sv swelling velling of the eyes had dis disappeared appeared and she be was well 1 I very well remember the excitement and feelings of the people of nauvoo when word vord was received of the murder of joseph and hyrum in cartilage carthage jail and the sorrow of the saints when the bodies of the martyrs i were brought to nauvoo and I 1 never can forget the sight which I 1 saw when I 1 went with my parents to view the remains tor for the last time there were the two brothers laying side by side one oie sheet covered them both in life they were so united in death they were not separated mrs houtz has lived in her neat lit ht j tie cottage in the second ward to fo many years beloved by all who know her for 11 years 41 1 e has been coun cilar to mrs airs charlotte boden of the ward relief society |
