Show Another year gggjgBBBBggggffgggBBBM by Tom Geffe staff writer Confidence is what stormed into the Southern Utah University's Forensics Tournament Sept 9 along with CEU's highly regarded forensics squad Under thedirectionofhcadcoach Dean Gundlach and assistant Chris Utah Eastern Harper competitors picked up from where they left off last 28-2- first-ye- ar another first place finish for CEU's forensics squad ycar’ Waning in style Fielding ten schools at the two-da- y tournament CEU brought home top honors by not only taking First place in the college division but also number one overall The top finisher in two event in the tournament was Toni Nielson who ranked first among all CED A debaters and first in after dinner two-ye- ar speaking Nielson is a sophomore trans- fer from Dixie College Parliamentary debate was host to both the open and novice divisions which saw CEU teams compete in each The finest showing for the squad was by Breezy Perry and Joe Wayman who took first place honors in the novice division Even more gratifying than the first place victory was the fact that it was this team's first collegiate tour- nament Two other top CEU finishers in debate were Johnny Thompson and Casey Wilson who qualified for the quarter finals in open parliamentary debate n the individual events portion of the tournament CEU competitors sur-passed much of the competition with many individuals reaching the finals The most impressive performance was given by Abranda Mudd Not only was she a finalist but placed second overall in individual events five-eve- nt She reached the finals in duo prose poetry Dl informative speaking and was named as the second most successful performer overall at this tournament A new focus this ycar for (he squad arc “Legs" strictly dealing with the individual events portion of forensics In the forensic's world “Legs" arc known as simply points or rankings to competitors The highest goal for (IE) competitors is to find themselves at the T (American Forensics ciation-National Individual Events in the Tournament) spring One qualifies by accumulating eight points or fewer in any individual event within the course of any three tournaments For this to happen one must reach the final round in that event and thus placing first through sixth receives a number or ranking the lower (he better Coach Gundlach feels now is (lie time to put great emphasis on qualifying individuals to MET nationals This emphasis being due to CEU's absence over past years at such a prestigious tournament Eastern Utah's debate has built a reputation as a regional and national power Since Gundlach's arrival in 1994 he built up a talented reputation for individual events within (he region now with emphasis on the “Legs" CEU stands to be a formidable force in the nation CEU forensics extends a warm welcome this ycar to assistant Coach Chris Harper and his wife Christy from Jonesboro Ark Coach Harper is a graduate of Arkansas State University and holds a specialist's master's and two bachelor1 s degrees in assoned f elds y of communications education phi I his wife and sociology larpcr and arc glad to he here and describe Price as “a nice area to live" His comments on this squad and their first tournament was “Everyone seems to have a good work ethic and an even better attitude to go along with it I feel we handled Southern Utah with great successes though a smaller tournament it was a nice start for the season This weekend (Oct the team travels to Colorado Springs for the Air Force ForensicsToumament where the field of competition will be much stifler This year's team is fielded with a unique talent and if as individuals and a squad enormous work is put foitn then CEU forensics stands to make a severe impact in their quest to he number one not only in the region but also the nation Asso- AFA-NIE- loso-ph- 2-- 4) We oa tvt to kear iouir vleiopolsvts- - letter to tke editor to aiv C Gaalc l5tri-t- e cl ou Price Utok t45°t I |
